Was it a Bible? I recall some years ago a similar stunt (not videoed, for it was before such things) where some preacher thought that holding a Bible against his chest would stop a bullet.

No, it was an encyclopedia volume. I'd suggest you look into the facts (there are several stories regarding this case and many mention the book used) before commenting as such.
