The Baltimore City Public School System recently instituted a program called "Meatless Monday" where all schools in the district will only provide a vegetarian menu during lunch. This was seen as a way to cut costs, and also allow students to have healthier food options. The American Meat Institute says that "Students are being served up an unhealthy dose of indoctrination." Is this really indoctrination?

I personally see no problem with this. Vegetarian meals still provide many ways for students to get protein, and students will still have the option of eating meat four other days during the week. Plus, they can always bring their lunch if this is really a concern. Below is a clip of from Lou Dobbs on this issue:

Meat costs money. Schools have to cut back anyway they can. No problem with no meat at lunch.
It's not like this is their only meal.

Heck go 2-3 days with meatless lunches.

Pancakes on Monday
Macaroni & Cheese on Wednesday
Pizza on Friday

What's wrong with that ? That's ok for a kids lunch. No one is starving them for pete's sake.

I completely agree. Many people are calling this political, but if the school sees this as a effective way to save money, I really don't see the problem. Like you said, the kids will not starve.

I agree. Kids are not required to have meat and if the parents are all freaked out about it, pack a lunch. Who wants to eat the meat served in a school cafeteria anyway? EW! I know I never did. Poor quality. At least there are meals served. Kids could probably use a few more veggies anyway.

The production of meat has a huge carbon footprint and it takes about 4600 liters of water to produce one hamburger.

There are some reallly good meat substitutes/alternatives available. Loma Linda has 100% low fat veggie burgers, and hot dogs. And they taste good. Not like sawdust, and rubber.

Some vegetarians won't eat it because it looks too much like meat, but veggies were here long before meat.
