I am not sure about this but I think I once saw somewhere on the Internet or one of those catalogues you get in the mail that there were "cage" type devices you could use to put over them. They stick out a little bit from the wall just an inch or so but they keep little hands from hitting the actual vent.

Maybe I imagined it or am thinking of something else but you could check it out at a Home Depot or someplace like that to see if something like that actually does exist. Or maybe they could give you some ideas on how to make the area safe.

Years ago I lived in a condo in Salem that had a Cadet in every room. We used them as back-up heaters for the oil filled radiators that we bought. The Cadets work much faster in the morning to bring the room up to a decent temperature but they aren't as efficient for hour by hour heating chores. Presently, we (different we) have a Cadet knock-off in the bathroom. It melted a hole in Winston's litter box at six inches. I don't think there is too much chance of a child getting too close to one while its running. Always a good idea to teach children what not to do, but... I wouldn't bother in the case of the Cadet. If you didn't tell your child anything special about the heating technology you presently use I wouldn't make an exception for the Cadet.
