we moved last week to Forest Grove from SW Portland (garden home). I liked Garden Home, but I think we really will love FG.

it's definitely a different pace out here, but everyone is SO FRIENDLY! After a week of being here we've met tons of neighbors and had cookies brought over from the lady next door. I think part of the issue is we lived in an HOA full of retirees in Garden Home, and we rarely saw anyone outside. People (including the retirees) are out and about more and stop to talk, which is nice. I like being closer to the agricultural areas; it's really lovely to look at.

There is a lot to do and it seems super safe - reading the police log for this town is good entertainment!

We're renting for now. I'm hoping that if we end up staying here for the long haul we can buy one of those beautiful old homes near the center of town.

Forest Grove has the Momokawa Sake Distillery in town. If you're into Sake at all, they're one of the best Sakes made in the United States.

Oh, and L Bar T Bison Ranch is out there. McMenamins Grand Lodge is OK for an occasional visit, but the food and drinks are typical McMenamins.

I also live in Garden Home, and wonder what were the reasons for your move?
I assume you don't need to go anywhere, since Forest Grove is so far out and difficult commute to downtown or any other part of the metro area.
I've been to FG a few times, and while it has a nice, rustic and outdoorsy feel to it, it also has problems.
I saw graffiti in the middle of "downtown". Hispanic gangs seem to run the place. Perhaps you feel safe because you're don't belong to one? Maybe I am wrong, but it's good that you are renting so you can leave if FG is not what you expect.

I'd have to say if FG has gone downhill I would be sad. I sure like the town and the holdover early century homes and buildings.
I doubt that gangs are ruling the streets. They do probably have a presence. Check with the local law enforcement and see what if any gang activity there is. They usually have some "business" that is a main focus.

As far as graffiti goes the community just has to say NO to tagging.

I lived in San Antonio for a few years. The west and south side is just covered with it. It is just part of the landscape now. Taggers are vermin.

Do report what you can on the actual situation.

I am glad you had the local friendlies welcome you. It is nice to know people do still have manners. I recently moved and have been meeting my neighbors. Friendly people are refreshing.

well...we moved a year ago from phoenix, so my idea of "hispanic gangs" is probably different from yours. I feel safe here just as i did in Garden home.

Reasons for move: we wanted less traffic, smaller established community and i like that there are a few disability inclusion non-profts based here. I have a son who has a physical difference and wanted a smaller town where people would get to know him, which is easier in a smaller community (IMO). I used to commute to OHSU, and doing that plus daycare plus having a kid starting school in the fall was getting to be a real PITA. I now work remotely part time, which is preferable to me.

My husband works in beaverton, and though his commute has grown considerably in miles, it has only gained a few extra minutes because the flow of traffic for our old commute was so slow.

Has Forest Grove survived wokeness and the crime surge as of this reply date? Notably worse now? Cornelius always had a sketchy reputation.

I was checking out housing in west Beaverton around Walker Rd. and 170th Ave., and noticed a lot of shady people around a convenience store in a condo-dense area, though the rest of the area looked outwardly peaceful. One problem is you can't tell what goes on behind doors, as long as someone maintains grounds and exteriors.

The friends I have who live there or nearby have said FG still remains a nice small city with minimal struggles.

Probably some facebook nextdoor community pages can fill you in.

If you are close by, I suggest identifying those events / groups you would benefit from if living there and go visit and volunteer with the community to make some relationships. That way you'll figure out where you might want to pursue living, and have your ducks in a row before you arrive.
