A reported drive-by in Southeast Portland on Sunday night is the 25th gang-related shooting in May.

What is going on this year?

This is not only nuts but downright dangerous and some of these 'kids' are barely old enough to drive. One recent target is evidently only 14 yo. The City and the County needs to devote a lot more resources to gangs. Often members are too afraid of other members to 'snitch'.

They really haven't been much of an issue until recently but it only takes a couple hot heads to start a fight.

That's ultimately why I got the hell out of Portland. My roommate was dragging me into that "gang culture" and I wanted no part of it.

When a city's policy is all about the interests of the rich, it's inevitable that gangsters will take over the poorer areas as civilization loses control of them. When you consider the "anti-snitching" culture of Portland and the general denial of any problems in the city it's no wonder gangs are starting to take over there.

I wasn't considering joining one of course, but my roommate would try to start crap with thuggish people when I went out places with him, and since I was with him it was dangerous for me too! And then he'd get upset when I didn't try to be defensive/aggressive, not realizing that I just refuse to be a part of that world in any way.

Oh yes! Consider the challenges of parents who have teens who are being sucked into that culture.

Maybe the kids should be required to view 8 hours of The First 48 to see the impact of that activity on their family and their future.

This happens not just in Portland. It could be in your neighborhood at any time.
