For some reason, I’m really drawn to the St. Johns area. It has a different feel to me. Is that a good area to buy a house and live?

The problem with St. Johns is its remote location. It feels very far from virtually every other part of Portland. Unless you're an industrial worker that works in NW or N Portland, it will feel like an inconvenient place to live that no one will want to visit.

A commute over the St. John's Bridge is awful.

It depends...
Neighbors on WA side of west Columbia Gorge have been using St Johns Bridge and Germantown Road as primary commute to Intel and Nike for over 40 yrs.

Coworkers from Beaverton and Hillsboro used the same route to commute to Camas and Vancouver.

They prefer it to Sylvan.

If commute is your issue... work night shift! More pay, fewer bosses, more responsibility, more freedom, no interruptions, no back-stabbers, and EZ commute. And +++ every "Day" is a day off! , use it as you please, you can always go to work tired and still perform more productively and efficiently than most day-shifters. And... you have a LOT more time to yourself. (best to have NO commute if possible, even more time to use for your own acct.)

Working nights reduced my retirement date by over 15 yrs.
Used the St Johns Bridge 3x in the last week. (no problem). but... be advised, problems can happen.
