I have seen "Family parking spots" in some places, for women with children, closer to stores, to make it easier on Mom's with kids.

People are right when they say this isn't needed....pregnancy is NOT a disability unless the doctor says so in individual cases..
Some women have run marathons whilst pregnant. It is not a disease, not a weakness.

It could even be Republican's way of saying women are weak and helpless, see, we need to take care of them.
Sorry, I guess I didn't recognize this as a Republican/Democrat issue. If anything, I would think the Democrats would be the ones to try to enable pregnant women to be helpless and rely on government intervention during their pregnancies. Regardless of who's idea it was, it doesn't make any sense to me.

Ya know, no one should have to read an entire thread to post but reading the OP seems essential.

Sorry, but as usual, only the evil Republican was identified as such in the original post. The others were only noted as being opposed to the legislation, and, not being from CA, I had no idea that NOW and the CA chapter of the ACOG were Democratic organizations and that they were only opposed because a "cold-hearted" Republican thought of it. Just another shining example of how no one can be objective and let anything be decided on it's merits.

California is considering legislation to issue a temporary handicapped parking permit to women who are entering their last trimester of pregnancy, good for the final three months of pregnancy and an additional two months after childbirth (five months total).

What I find interesting though is the support and objection to this proposal.

It is being proposed by a male Republican State Representative, who believes that women at that point in time should be provided some additional consideration due to the physical inconvenience associated with the last stages of pregnancy, and the need to provide a bit of time for post birth recovery.

The bill is mainly opposed by two organizations, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' California chapter, and the California chapter of the National Organization for Women. The first group opposes it due to the message of encouraging exercise while pregnant and the second group because they don't want pregnancy seen by the public as a disability.

When you look at how organizations and political parties are viewed by many folks, doesn't this seem a bit odd? You have a male Republican from a very strong republican district (Irvine, CA) proposing this support, and aren't Republicans generally viewed as a bit cold hearted? You have the two women's support groups rejecting this proposal because they don't want ladies in the later stages of pregnancy identified as potentially needing special considerations.

Politics - California bill would give free parking to moms-to-be - sacbee.com (http://www.sacbee.com/111/story/799215.html - broken link)

Thoughts?
They have special parking areas in my neck of the woods (Pittsburgh Pa) for pregnant women. Its being done by the individuals that own the shopping plaza's... We dont need another law mandating yet another program.

I think this type of legislation is just silly. Pregnancy isn't a medical condition, it's nature. And while some women do have some problems to deal with, that isn't the norm. Most women who are having complications surely aren't out shopping??? But anyway....walking is good for pregnancy. Helps keep the pelvic area strong, giving way to an easier delivery.

Really, in my opinion, it's laughable to think pregnancy requires a handicap sign....

If by cold hearted you mean Republicans believe that people can solve their own problems without help of the government, then yes, they are cold hearted (and thank god for that)

Pregnancy is not a disability. If one's pregnancy does render them disabled, they will qualify for a placard. I don't think a pregnant woman's ease is more important than an elderly person's ease who doesn't qualify for a placard. Leave the special parking spaces for those who need it, not for those whose life is impacted by a chosen state (not talking about the pregnant women rendered disabled by pregnancy related health issues). Besides, as mentioned, walking is GOOD for pregnant women.

Ok, I've had this conversation with my boyfriend. No pregnancy is not a disability, but it can be disabling. I've been pregnant twice, and both times living in california, I had the option of applying for a placard. Not only is walking not always good for a pregnant woman, but it can be dangerous depending on the trimester she is in, and the individual case.

I don't think it should become a law, but that's just because I want LESS government in my life, not more. However, it should be an option that any woman can get if she feels that she needs it during pregnancy, or shortly there after. Especially with other little ones in the picture as well.

Personally, before we start worrying about whether or not a pregnant woman is getting a plac before an elderly person (which most can get a placard very easily), I'd much rather put harsher punishments on those who park in the handicapped spaces any way!

We have "Family parking spots" all over the place up here in Canada, usually right next to the handicap space; I don't think it's the law to have them.
The signed show a toddler in a stroller. Meaning you don't have to be a mother with kids, you can be father with kid(s), pregnant, mother with kid(s), grand parent with kid(s).
