So, I didn't know I was pregnant for the first five weeks. Once I found out, I immediately started taking prenatal vitamins. I am so worried that my child will have a neural tube defect because I understand the spine and brain are the first to develop in those first weeks.

I have my very first appointment with my doctor next week, but I am so anxious to hear what she has to say.

What was your experience if you didn't take prenatals the first month?

Most women don't even know their pregnant until 4 or 5 weeks. I really wouldn't worry so much.

As the earlier poster mentioned most women do not know they are pregnant until a month, unless it is a planned pregnancy. So, please do not worry about it. The one thing in addition to prenatal vitamins, that I will recommend is to drink a lot of water - at least 7 glasses of water a day.

Here is a very good article for you to read:

Doctor told me after I found out i was pregnant at 9 weeks (because i didnt miss my period), after finding out about a bit of binge drinking the previous weekend, that in general (excepting hard drugs) any mistakes you make before you find out are nothing to worry about. The plancenta isnt doing anthing in the way of nourishing the baby until after 8 weeks. Your baby has a yolk sac inside the egg that nourishes the growing fetus until the placenta takes over at 9 or 10 weeks. Prior to that the neural pathways are developing but you arent feeding them yet. Dont worry!

Relax. Take your vitamins. 5 weeks pregnant means 3 weeks since conception, cause weird pregnancy math. It’s going to be a very long 9 months if you don’t relax.

Congratulations!

Yes this been the case with one of my friends. In a few cases, it is unknown until 4 or 5 weeks.
