We chose family names, but then again, we had family names that I really did like. Somewhat popular, but not in the top ten or anything like that.
I've taught a lot of the students with the unusual names or unusual spellings and I can tell you that most of them do not enjoy the unique names as much as the parents do.
Basically I chose names I liked and DH vetoed or accepted. He was awful at thinking of names.
I wanted names that were moderately unique but recognizable. I did not want the kid needing to spell the name each time it was said. As it turned out, the name I chose to give my firstborn turned out to be in common usage. Luckily we gave the kid a great diminutive that the kid still uses.
People have actually complimented my name choices.
My kids have always seemed fine with their names, thank goodness.
We were living in Utah, pregnant with first kid. This was in the days before the internet, before smart phones, when you kept a yellow pages and a white pages in the car, in case you needed to look something/someone up. We got out the White Pages on a long drive, and went through all the names under Young and Smith. "Nah, I knew a kid I didn't like by that name." "Nope, that's my father's name, and he's still alive." Finally we hit a name we both liked, had good associations for us, so that's what we used! It was hubby's deceased non-Jewish grandfather's name, so we simply translated it into Hebrew for his Hebrew name. Funny, how my firstborn's Hebrew name is for his Christian great-grandfather.
First son was named after both their grandfathers. Second named after me and his mother's uncle (her dad's twin).
Funniest one I heard was a friend whose daughter was born on the first day of Summer, so her name is Summer Day.
We wanted names that sounded good for an adult as well as a child.
I agreed with him for first son's name.
We both chose daughter's name going through a list of girl's names.
I chose 2nd son's name, husband agreed.
All 3 are okay with their names.
