So who else has gotten their 2014 HO renewal policies? Mine went up by a massive amount compared to 2013. Is this how it goes from now on - the coast gets a storm and the rest of us have to pay to rebuild those houses?

Stormchasers are rolling through Cary, street after street, and getting people 80% or more of the cost of a new roof, on 20+ year old, 20 years shingles.
Someone has to foot that bill. You don't have to go to the coast to see insurance money dribbling away.

Yikes. Well, typically my understanding is my particular ins. co doesn't pay for things like that, but who knows.

Ours renewed in January, increasing about 12% (some of which related to personal property riders).

I think insurance companies thrive on the fact that most folks are reluctant to shop around, especially with something like homeowners insurance where there may be a link to the bank (escrow etc.) and it seems like a hassle to change it.

To me, every time they increase my rate, that's my cue to shop around for someone who wants my business more and can offer a better rate, even if I have to do it every year. These crooks are going to drop you if you ever have an actual claim anyway, so I don't see it matters much who the insurance company du jour ends up being.

Our insurance (USAA) has gone up ~20% per renewal since 2010, I've yet to receive 2014's renewal and will not until September. We do have maximum liability and also have the maximum deductible which is $2500. I'd gladly triple it as we are pretty much self insured for everything minus a huge lawsuit or a complete/total loss but USAA does not have an option higher.

Oh well.

Oh well.
Why not shop around like the previous poster suggested?
