The reason I asked is because the latest I had read is that Rapid City was going on with expansion plans. The article talked about Hot Spring shutting down the medical hospital because it was just to out dated and too expensive to upgrade. Much cheaper to build new and if they did build new, it was going to be in Rapid City. It also mentioned taking part of the medical building and expanding the DOM and nursing facility.
I don't believe those decisions have been made yet. They are still waiting for the Economic Impact Statement. Then there will be some more meetings to discuss the EIS. Then there is the budget, etc, etc.
Despite all the political hoopla, the Hot Springs VA is going to get shut down. The Congressional members of SD just do not have the political pull nor seniority to save it. If you can get a job at the Ft Meade VA, do it.
Iv'e only been to Rapid City twice and Hot Springs twice and that was during summer months. But as it is a northern cold climate and passing thru a mountainous area I would for sure want studded tires as I'm sure one would encounter at least black ice conditions in the early and late hours of commuting. At the least your not going to drive full highway speeds in bad weather unless you have a death wish. I was seriously looking at buying retirement property in Hotsprings but talking to some locals if the v.a. hospital goes away the town will die including that beautiful golf course. lots of nice homes on golf course for sale as they want to get out before a total collapse I believe .
It has been years since I had studded tires on my car. Actually the only time I ever ran studded was on rear wheeled drive cars. Sure, you can run studded. I'll pass. If you insist on winter tires run blizzak tires.

WOW!!!! You have visited Hot Springs twice and you know more about it than I have learned in several years of living there. You must be a genius!! Well, obviously you don't know a lot about black ice or you would know that it rarely occurs in a dry climate.
I also have a problem accepting the idea that you are clairvoyant and know for a fact that Hot springs will die if the V A Hospital goes away. The last I heard is that the State of SD has made a commitment to keep the State V A home in Hot Springs. Based on the amount of construction that is going on at the State Home, it appears that they are following up on their commitment. They employ a number of people also. Oh, and then there is the minor fact that Hot Springs is, and will remain, the county seat for Fall River county. As a consequence of that, Hot Springs has a handful of county and state jobs that will remain. Of course none of that takes into consideration the fact that the V A will, under any conditions, keep a service center in Hot Springs. Of course there are also the mining, agriculture, & tourism sectors which are also quite busy.
My suggestion is that you trade in your crystal ball and research the facts before you make any more outlandish predictions.
Live out of Hot Springs. Do not take a chance on your property values plummeting like every one else has or just simply rent. Live in Buffalo Gap where there are some real red necks.. Good luck to you.
Plenty of places to live between rapid and hot springs. Hermosa or Hot springs is where I'd live.
And you don't have to drive the hills to get from rapid to hot springs, you can just drive down the hiway, I think its 84, I never pay attention to the number even though I drive it often
Hot Springs is so down and out that real estate prices are going up and inventory is down. ;-{>8
