I just posted a few days ago about moving to Ellsworth AFB in January, and I was checking all of the "big" cell phone companies coverage, and all of the ones I am familiar with either do not have coverage or are roaming. What cell phone serivce gets coverage in this area? Thanks!
I had to switch from Sprint to Verizon when I moved from Tech School in TX up to Ellsworth. One guy in my shop still has AT&T since they apparently have free roaming or something. Everybody else has as said Alltel or Verizon, but since Verizon is buying Alltel hopefully we get some other companies to move into South Dakota.
Things have changed a lot since 2008. For anyone else who stumbles upon this, there are three main carriers now:
AT&T - They bought the old Alltel network. This is a very good system statewide and in Rapid City.
T-Mobile - They are new to the area, and expanding fast. Service has been pretty darn good over the last few months (matching Verizon in Rapid City), and where they don't have service, you can roam on AT&T. You can drive I-90 across the state and never drop, but they don't have all of the rural areas finished yet. They also don't have local numbers in Rapid City yet, but they are coming shortly.
Verizon - They have always had a good network statewide and in Rapid City.
I had Verison for over 10 years in Nevada but here in the Black Hills I lost signal a lot. I have since switched to ATT.
