A Vitamix cleans itself, just fill it half full of warm water, add a drop of dish washing liquid and blend for one minute. Then rinse and it is clean.

Wouldn't you be able to do that with all blenders? That is a good trick though!

I have an Oster as well, I use it to make banana smoothies, puree soups and canned tomatoes. I would like a vitamix but can't afford it.

My VitaMix finally gave up the ghost last year so I bought the blender attachment for my Bosch Compact Kitchen Center. It works sufficiently for most things, but I miss being able to puree things to a velvety consistency.

Although a combination of using my Cuisinart to chop things down fine and putting them into the blender to finish is a work around, there is no substitute for a VitaMix or Blendtec. Owning one of these is like having a blender on steroids. They are serious workhorses worthy of their cost.

I've always cleaned every blender I've ever had, this way. It's not a Vitamix-specific method.

We have a KitchenAid Pro blender. Works great, but not quite up to the Vitamix/Blendtec standard. It's used for making mayo, smoothies, and pureeing soups.

After posting on this thread, I thought I would revisit making a smoothie in my Bosch blender. I hadn't made one in quite sometime so I thought I would give it a go. I added the frozen fruit, water, protein powder, nuts and turned it on. Ha! Never even got the blades spinning. So I dumped everything into my Cuisinart, turned it on and it easily handled the frozen fruit. But I still had to dump the contents back into the blender to get a smoother texture. Now I remember why I hadn't made a smoothie in a while...

I can use my Cuisinart for a variety of things including making mayo and hummus. I can coarse chop or slice veggies, shred cheese and in a pinch, it kneads bread dough very quickly. I have an immersion blender for pureeing soups and making salad dressings. But if I need to have an absolute smooth, velvety puree, nothing compares to a VitaMix...seriously.

I think I'm going to have to move that VitaMix up on my list of priorities. I guess I miss it more than I realized

I have a Blendtec and I love it! I've made tahini in it, all kinds of smoothies and soups and anything I need to get to a silky consistency, it will do. Plus, cleaning it is so simple because the blades are not sharp (I clean it the old fashioned way). They had an offer for customers to buy their Wildside Jar for $12 to cover shipping & handling because they won a lawsuit against Vitamix but that jar is $99! So I have two jars now; one for sweet things like smoothies and the other for more savory things.

It sounds like a lawn mower when turned on, though!

When I had a lesser brand blender, I know it helps to have the liquid go in first and then add the "dry" stuff in stages. So in your case it would have been the liquid with the frozen fruit, puree. Then the nuts. Puree and lastly the powder. It sucked though. My blender I have now has a smoothie function button which rocks. But I agree, it can't compare to a VitaMix!

I also use my Vitamix nearly every day. Chopping, blending, dressings, sauces--all kinds of things!
