Hi, I'm new to the forum. But I've followed City-Data.com for a long time. Been thinking of moving.

Why is Neil Road so bad? I see there is a Mormon center nearby. (I'm not Mormon, but I don't think they're known for their violence) - Also, I see some Starbucks, a Trader Joes and some bookstores in the area. What am I missing? Why is it horrible?

Are we talking murder? Robberies? Not safe to walk or go out at night? Thanks

Really? I'm not Hispanic. I know maybe 3 or 4 words in the Spanish language. I actually like Mexican culture very much. But I don't like drugs, gangs or violence.

The immediate south side of Reno, between the Peppermill and Neil Road, between Plumas and the airport is pretty low rent. Lots of apartments with way too many people living in each one, lots of crime.

It's not as bad as people say, bc they're from Reno and not Oakland or LA or NYC. Back in the 90's there was a gang problem there, but not so much anymore. It's basically Neil Road between Moana and McCarran. There's just a lot of low income housing and apartments with a huge immigrant Latino population. I'd say 99% of them are hardworking, law-abiding citizens. What you're talking about, Trader Joes, Starbucks, is McCarran Bl which is like the border between ghetto and middle class corporate, suburban Americana. The further South you go from McCarran Bl, the nicer it gets until you reach Summit Sierra Mall which is the upper-middle class to lower-upper class retail area. However, there's also the divide between west of Virginia St and east of Virginia St. West of Virginia Street, north of McCarran is the Old Southwest which is still nice, and outside the McCarran loop you have a lot of new McMansions. However, west of Virginia and near the Peppermill, you have a small area of low income apartments that isn't too bad.

I don’t know how bad it is now. I’m 28 yo and lived there as a kid. We had a guy shooting up the complex at one point and I was watching my step sister at the time. She made it to a friends apartment. I opened the door (ducked down already after telling the brothers to get in the hallway and away from the windows), looking for her only to be greeted by the man no more than 5 feet away waving his gun around. I closed the door and we laid low for a while. After all was said and done, my step sister came home shortly after scared. Second total scare, swat came rolling through one evening. I had no clue. I drove up to our apartment and stepped out the car. Immediately had laser pointed at me. I ducked behind my car and ran for my apartment. They were looking for an armed suspect. I’ve looked for the records on this, but it’s archived. I’ve also been harassed and asked if I was a “working lady”. I reminded them I was only 14-16 (two years of being asked almost everyday). Was left alone most the time. I’ve seen drug deals, people being held at gun point, and have heard drive bys with many bullets. I used to carry a pocket knife, a skateboard, and eventually pepper spray. I walked alone most the time, always looking behind me. People would look at me like I was a piece a meat or flash me their color to try to intimidate me. Was constantly asked why I never joined or would join a gang.

It’s not just that area. All through Reno even in the upper class areas we’ve had rape and murder. You will have that any where you go unfortunately.

And Little Biggest Drunk is right. It’s nothing like your bigger cities. My husband once lived that life and lived in Fresno, CA. He tells me it’s nothing here. Chicago is a ten fold along with many more.
