My husband and I (and our pug/lab dog) will be moving to the area for his job (he will be working in Fernley). Looking to rent in Sparks/Reno.

We need to know good areas for rentals (around 800-1000...2 bedrooms). We are active, like to go out to dinner and preferably would like to keep his commute under 30-45 mins. Any advice? Good places/people to contact for rental properties? Awesome apartment complexes? Great neighborhoods for a young/married couple?

Thank you in advance!!!

Welcome to the board.
If I were you I would look in Sparks, because it's closer to Fernley. Look East of McCarran, and North of I-80 and you should find what you're looking for. Find a place were you can stay by the week, and drive out Sparks Blvd., and Vista to get your bearings. South Reno has nice areas, but would be a further drive.

Mr. Willys has suggested a good area to look. There are some nice complexes up there and freeway access is way good. Is there a reason that Fernely itself is not an option? Its a decent, semi rural, town and offers a lot for active people. You may find rental prices more agreeable as well compared to the metro area. Fallon is another option, and in either area you may be able to find an actual house as opposed to an apartment for what said apartment would cost in the city . Just a thought. Many people prefer the metro area for a variety of reasons, but the outlying communities have much to offer as well.

I would live in Fernley, you can rent a house there cheaper than you can rent an apartment in other places and it's an easy drive to Reno for shopping etc. Check Craigslist, there are some nice rental homes for $800-$900 a month: reno all housing classifieds "fernley" - craigslist

I would normally agree about East Sparks. I love the area off of Vista/Los Altos/D'Andrea. If you are set on Sparks, that's the place to be. There are plenty of rental houses or apartments that will allow your dog. Some great apartment complexes to check out are The Villas at D'Andrea, Bristol Bay and Canyon Vista both on Los Altos.

I agree, however, that Fernley might be a better bet for his commute. I guess it depends on where you may work or want to work? Fernley is a great little town and like the other posters said the rental houses are less expensive than Reno/Sparks. It is only about 35 minutes to Reno if you want to go out to dinner or someplace special, but for the day to day I'd look at Fernley to kill the commute.

Also, keep in mind that I-80 is the only direct route from Fernley to Reno and in the winter or when there is an accident the road can be closed or blocked for a while until it's cleared up.
