Hey Reno residents!

I am planning a road trip from San Francisco to Denver after COVID is over (stay safe) and I was planning to drive from SF to Reno then Elko, and beyond. I was wondering whether I should stay in Reno or Carson City. I am planning to spend a day in either Reno or Carson City and then drive on. Which city has better attractions? Could you recommend some? I am interested in everything, but I'm specifically also interested in used bookstores; I'm trying to hunt down a specific book.

Sorry if this post is quite unorganized, this is my first post ever on City-Data.

Thanks in advance!

If time is no object, then spend a day and night in both Reno and Carson City.

Tell us about the book, chances are we can find it online, like at Powell's or Abe's or Tattered Cover in Denver which is a place I've gotten blissfully lost in and walked out with a SHOPPING BAG full of books.

Are you / were you a librarian. I know of a couple librarians here in CD who might have some ideas for finding a rare book.

For how long will you stay? Just overnight and then leave? You could drive down Virginia Street from downtown Reno (kind of empty nowadays) to midtown. You could also visit Virginia City and Genoa. I'm guessing you've already been to Tahoe?

Reno has two excellent used bookstores - Grassroots Books and Sundance Books. Good luck with your search.

Tattered Cover seems to be a really interesting bookstore, I'll go check it out, thanks! Which location do you recommend for finding used books?

The Tattered Cover in downtown Denver; the LODO area, near Union Station and the 16th St Mall. Great walkable area.

When visiting there we stayed at The Oxford Hotel and ate in their art deco 'Cruise Room' which was way cool. The bookstore is a one block walk from the Oxford. There's a ton of eateries in the area and the 16th Pedestrian Mall is car-free with free bus service for its 2-mile run.

If your traveling via I80 then you would probably stay in Reno...unless your taking a scenic route through Tahoe and then Carson City is a good option if you come down Spooner Summit on Hwy 50.

So if you a nature lover and that is your attraction, go through Tahoe and stay in Carson City when you are done enjoying the beauty of the mountains and lake, you can then visit Virginia City the next day and drive down Geiger grade into Reno hook up with I80 and head to Elko. Or you can drive around Washoe Lake on East Lake Blvd and check out the wild horses and deer along the way...wild horses on the way up to Virginia City as well out of Carson.

If you are looking for casino type attractions, then Reno is the place to be. Carson has a couple of interesting museums to visit...depending on the time of year there are often festivals and car shows in either city.

If you want to go hiking, beaches at Tahoe etc, let us know for good ideas...
