Hi everyone - I am looking at relocation to Richmond to follow my wife's career. I have led a dual life for years now with both Professional Music Industry experience (Producer/Audio Engineer/Artist Manager/Performer) and high level IT experience (Director/executive management for IT in the non-profit/education sector).
I'm curious as to job market in either of these sectors. any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks -- Rob

for what it's worth, here are two popular recording studios in Richmond:

Sound of Music - Sound Of Music Recording Studios
In Your Ear Music - Audio for Video | Post-Production | Original Music | Recording Studios | Richmond, VA | In Your Ear | Home

i don't know many people who do the IT thing and music thing simultaneously with equal effort, but i know quite a few people who work in IT and do the music/band/church-music thing on the side as a hobby.

as for music venues in richmond:

The National - The National - Richmond, VA - Schedule
The Canal Club - The Canal Club
Alley Katz - Alley Katz - Richmond, VA ...Since 1995
Landmark Theatre - Landmark Theater :: Home

hope this helps, good luck.

That's much appreciated. I plan to pursue them both at first
and see what "takes" would prefer to do music but don't
know how realistic it is. Are you aware of any open mic or
sit-in blues jams in the area? Often a good way to meet some
players.

I know this doesn't offer any help to your question, but it's interesting to know that Richmond actually seems to have kind of a music scene as some notable acts have come from here. I'm into rock music so that's what I pay attention to. Bands such as Gwar, Lamb Of God, Cracker, the Deceased, Municipal Waste, Carbon Leaf. And Dave Matthews Band was founded an hour away in Charlottesville to name a few. Richmond seems to have a hardcore punk/metal underground, whether people are aware of it or not. Just thought it might be interesting, as all these acts somehow make a living off of music and are from the Richmond area.

Default Thanks

Thanks for replying Nebat - any information is helpful as I start educating myself. some of those names have come up in other searching I have done. I'll have to find my niche. As a player (sax/perc/vox) I prefer R+B, funk, pop. As a Producer - I have worked mostly with singer/songwriters and Americana acts. I suspect there's a decent market for Americana in the region. I'm hoping I can leverage the fact that I'm a multiple Boston Music Award winner (new England's regional version of the Grammy's) and produced a national Top 10 Americana CD last year to help lend some credibility.

You said there are touring acts coming through - are you aware of any great local acts in the genres I work with that might play regularly in Richmond? -- Rob

You might want to familiarize yourself with the VCU Music Faculty. They include some great players: Skip Gailes, Antonio Garcia, Mike Ess, etc, and they can be seen playing live around town all the time. A lot of the kids playing the corner diners graduated from there or at least were a student there at one time. Also check out VCU's live music events.

Faculty – VCU Music
Concerts & events – VCU Music

For local gig places,

Emilio's
Emilio's Restaurante - Richmond, VA on Broad St. Every Friday night they do a live blues/jazz jam. Anyone who wants to play can come and play with them. They typically do blues and common jazz standards (St. Thomas) Old black guy named "Doc" has been the band leader there forever. They also have a flamenco guitar guy and have other scheduled bands that play throughout the week.

Cary St. Cafe is also another place, but scheduled bands play. Typically rock, jam-band or bluegrass. Live Music - Box Lunches - Cary Street Café - Richmond, Virginia

Just depends what scene you are looking for..

DJ Williams Projekt is another band that should be noted for coming out of Richmond, not sure if they are still playing at Cafe Diem every Tues night.
Matt Koon Band use to play around, usually at Pour House, but I think the band broke up.

Also check around the local music stores:

Richmond Music Center, Metro Sound & Music, Sam Ash, Guitar Center and Guitar Works in Cary Town.

Just ask around, people will know who is playing when and where.

Wow - Blu - thank you so much!!! Looks like live music is
really alive and well in Richmond. That list is large. The live
scene (once you get out of Boston proper) gas fallen off
quite a bit. That's so helpful - your beers are on me if we
make the transition. My wife will be flying down in the next
3 weeks for her big interview. Peace -- Rob

Many of those clubs are not in Richmond, but are within a 1 to 1.5 hour drive. I can't imagine Richmond having a better live scene than Boston, but for it's size I think it's quite well. In addition to my previous post I believe even Pat Benatar got her start here!
