You should check out Lynchburg. It used to be known as the Pittsburgh of the South... Still lots of old brick warehouses and mills downtown, many of which have been converted into lofts apartments... and its all set right on the James River.

Check out these photos:

I was born and raised outside of Pittsburgh and met a man from FLoyd and married him and lived in Floyd. So I know the difference.

Roanoke is nothing like Pittsburgh. I now live in the Pittsburgh area and to compare Roanoke to Pittsburgh is a huge injustice.

I have found that in Pittsburgh, if you don't have the RAH RAH PITTSBURGH WE ARE THE GREATEST then you are looked down upon. These people think that if you pile french fries and cole slaw on a sandwich you have conquered the world. Add that to poor grammar, you will fit right in.

Roanoke seemed to me to be a welcoming place. It's a great place to live.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and I've lived in Roanoke for 10 years. I can see a few similarities between industry. Roanoke is/was a pretty big railroad city while Pittsburgh had many of its jobs in steel. A lot of the people were your typical blue collar workers living in houses provided by the mills, railroads, or coal companies. This might be why you see some similar architecture.

In the late 80's and 90's Pittsburgh went though some rough times with the steel industry. They have really changed since then and are now leveraging the technology sector. This is bringing in many new jobs and really revitalizing the city. Roanoke, I think, is now on the downturn. While the hospital industry is doing well, I don't think the city itself is changing with the times. Jobs are disappearing. I hope that Roanoke will see a similar turn around that Pittsburgh went through.

As for the people, I find that Roanoke is a welcoming place for the most part. Pittsburgh is much more diverse, so you will run into a variety of people. If you don't like the people of Pittsburgh, chances are you've just run into the wrong type

I think either place would be fine to live, but it is hard to beat Roanoke's cost of living.
