Wife and I are staying in Salem both nights and want to check out the Salem/Roanoke areas. We live in VA but neither of us have spent any real time here. Any suggestions on must see places? We drink very little but would visit a brewery if highly recommended. Nice parks, museums and so on.

The Salem Red Sox are playing home games on the 4th & the 5th. They are not doing well this year, but it's still fun to go to a game. The Roanoke Star, the Transportation Museum, the Taubman Museum, the Visitor's Center/O. Winston Link Museum are good places to visit. Enjoy your time in Roanoke & Salem!

I second the nomination for the Winston Link Museum - it might not be to everyone's tastes - but I found it fascinating...and if you are interested in any one of the following, it will be worth the trip:
black and white photography
fifties culture
steam engines
quirky characters
it will be worth your while.

If you're interested in three or four of the above, you will LOVE IT!

Going up to the Mill Mountain Star is always a must. If you get there early enough you can watch the fireworks from above!

Peaks of Otter is a bit of a drive but it is awesome. If the weather is good, you can either hike to the top of Sharp Top OR take the bus shuttle most of the way up so that you only have a relatively short hike. The cool thing about Sharp Top is that you have a 360 degree view from there. Very nice!

Peaks of Otter trip might be worth it as I've been in VA since 73 and have never visited. Thanks.

If you are coming from I-81 N you could do Peaks of Otter either coming or going and save a little drive time...but check the weather to find optimal time!

That's a good possibility of doing it this way.

3 Notch'd has a tasting room downtown. Very good beers and the kitchen has much better offerings than the usual pub grub.

Across the street in the Center In The Square building is a koi pond on the roof (free) and a pinball museum on the 2nd floor.
