They're literally everywhere down here lol. Is there a reason why people in this part of the state seem to love their trailers? Not hating on trailer life, just genuinely curious if there's a reason.

True. I like that this area is less flashy than most cities.

I've just never seen a city where on one side of the street you have nice, newer houses and on the other side of the street is a long line of trailers. That's how our house is positioned.

Roanoke County is awful at planning. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to what goes where in the County.

Just to be clear, are you talking about Lynchburg? That might help give more clarity to the responses!

Ah yes sorry should have been more specific. Our house is in Lynchburg, but I've heard it's similar over in Roanoke.

Yeah, good question by Watchful to clarify the abundance of trailers (or lack of ) since I see very few in the Roanoke and Botetourt area.

Many have been there for years. Others can be installed in many Agricultural areas still today. In Virginia, we call it Freedom. Still somewhat like the old days where a man (or woman) can do what they want with their own land. You also may see a newer trailer in an unusual place. If there is a trailer there already, they will have the Grandfather rights to replace with a newer one.

Bigfoot424 has the right word though "Affordable".

Very few in Lynchburg. I assume you are in the county? The only areas in Lynchburg that still have trailers are areas that were annexed in the 70s, so suggesting that they proliferate would be inaccurate- zoning does not allow them in the city limits. Counties are entirely different and there are plenty outside of most cities west of Richmond.

The answer is affordability. One 2017 article I read stated, "In 2015, the average sales price for a new manufactured home was approximately $292,600 less than a site-built home."
I don't see many trailers in the City or County of Roanoke. The industry calls this type of housing "manufactured housing." You can do a search & pull up the industry organization - Manufactured Housing Institute. There's lots of info there. This organization states that more than 22 million people live in this form of housing.
