I'm trying to decide if I should uproot from Texas and move to Rochester to be near friends. I heard the employment for teachers was on freeze; I have been teaching Special Education for the past 17 in Texas. I only have a BS, and I have also heard you must have your master's to teach is this true? I also have been teaching Math, and I have a greater preference for this area of education. What is recommended, to stay in Texas or move to Rochester and teach and in which field would I be more apt to obtain a job?

very very hard to get a teaching job. The only saving grace is that you would be a math teacher which is in demand in some areas. I would not move without a job first.

I hear from so many persons in teaching that they have to leave New York State to get a job ... You'll want to be sure that you have a job lined up first if you want to be sure to work in teaching and want to live in NY ... very tough.

Unfortunately I will echo what everyone else has said. Even in math it is not easy. It took a friend's daughter who is special ed/math 4 years to get a permanent position in one of the area suburban districts. She did all the right things as far as subbing but it just took being in the right place at the right time.

Working in the Rochester City School district is not desirable for some because it's a large urban district. But it too is not easy to get into.

Good Luck.

Couple the freezes with the population losses and school closings. Teaching in NY is not what it was 10 years ago, job openings-wise.

Everyone of childbearing age has been fleeing Rochester for years, so they're looking to get rid of teachers, not hire them. A friend of mine with two MS's has been unemployed for five years because she refuses to leave Rochester. I pretty much walked straight into a full time high school teaching job in Florida, with no education degree or experience.

Sucks. I know folks who had to leave the area for places like DC metro and NC because they couldn't find teaching jobs in NY.
