CFY Development, which transformed the Globe Mills feed and flour mill in Alkali Flat into apartments, now proposes rehabilitating a vacant six-story warehouse at 11th and R streets as a complex where artists can live, work, hang out, and display and sell their work.

The Capitol Area Development Authority (CADA) board has not yet formally approved the concept. It is scheduled to view details in March.

CFY's Ali Youssefi said the project could include 120 apartment units and 25,000 square feet of retail space. Some apartments would rent for below-market rates, and others would be market rate, he said. The project could include artists' work areas, an art gallery, and offices for arts organizations.

Just wondering how realistic this is after reading the stories about the Globe Mills conversion. I think it would be great if it does happen.

There are already a lot of arts spaces along the R Street corridor: Verge Gallery, Dubinick relocated there from the MARRS building, Art Foundry has been at 10th and R for ages, Studio Theatre at 11th and R, and a smattering of other small galleries within a couple of blocks. And there are already a lot of places in the neighborhood with appeal to folks in the arts community--Beers Books, Doughbot, Insight Coffee--and still a few long-time local businesses that give the neighborhood its authentic feel, like Old Ironsides, Capitol Tea Garden, June's Cafe and Osaka-Ya.

The rub, with "artists' lofts," is actually renting them to artists (and making them affordable to artists) vs. people more familiar with "the art of the deal" but consider themselves part of the "creative class."

Conversion of the CADA lofts is a lot simpler project than Globe Mills--no super thick concrete walls that require windows cut through them.

If it happens, let's just hope it doesn't become an eventually run-down home of 120 starving artists and suffer the same fate as Del Paso so many years ago; or apparently Globe Mills for that matter.

Ponzi scheme in which a few people make some dough and subsidized housing ruins the rest. Artists flock to midtown.

But I am still pleased to hear of more culture coming to town. Imo, there cant be too much of this.

I don't know...I saw the development of the Torpedo Factory near Washington DC into an art district (of sorts) and it turned into a very impressive success story.

Yeah, a lot of cities have made some decent attempts to develop this type of area. My former location, Columbus OH had a pretty good development of an arts district too, in their Short North area.

Short North Gallery Hop, Monthly Gallery Hop, Columbus Art Galleries, Events in Columbus Ohio | Short North Arts District | Expressive. Edgy. Classic. Utterly unique. Simply cool!
