That is assuming, of course, OP can get into both schools, and can afford both, and so can choose.

Where are you planning on living/working once you graduate? In Sacramento there are plenty of alums of both schools, so you can usually find someone at most firms from both schools who will help you land an interview at firms in the general Sacramento area. But as you get further from the Sacramento region, then school prestige is probably more important than alumni connections. If trying to find a job in LA, its likely that the firm you are looking at probably won't have alums from either UC Davis or CSUS in that case they will probably screen you based on perceived talent based upon where you graduated from. If you are the person in charge of hiring and you graduated from USC and you have a choice of someone from either UC Davis or CSUS, you probably are going to assume that the UC Davis student is the stronger of the two candidates. Its in that situation where school prestige counts. If you are searching for work even further away like say looking for a job in New York or London, most people in those locations have heard of the University of California. But they may have no idea how good or bad CSUS really is.

If saving money on college is really expensive, you might consider looking at school closer to your parents and possibly living at home or alternatively you might consider a school in an area with cheaper rent like CSU Chico.

Is rent that much cheaper in Chico than it is here? And if the OP was looking for a prestige school rather than what they could afford, wouldn't they have mentioned that? Sure, if you can afford USC, go there...although they have a satellite campus up here. Personally I think we need our own private college in the central city--say, a "UNC" full-undergrad Northern California campus of USC, or a satellite campus of UoP?

I agree. Drexel has a grad program in Sac, but it's not really a prestige school (only second best in Philly behind Penn and some would say behind Temple too).

I think an undergrad satellite of Stanford would be nice.

A Stanford satellite campus would be somehow fitting, considering Leland Stanford's background and where he gained most of his wealth and reputation--like his confederates, he split town for the Bay Area where the weather was better and the social calendar more full, and put his namesake college there, while we got his old house for use as an orphanage. And how cool would it be to have a Stanford campus right on top of the railroad Leland Stanford helped create?

I'm not sure about student housing, but rent for single family homes is actually cheaper in Sacramento than it is in Chico.

Rents are cheaper in Chico, I have relatives who own rental properties in both areas. While there may be some individual homes in Chico than rent for more than individual homes in Sacramento, overall rents are cheaper in Chico, other expenses that will tend to be cheaper would be stuff like auto insurance.

With respect to single family homes, I beg to differ. Chico is comparable to Roseville, Gold River, or Carmichael in most neighborhoods. But it has nothing to offer that competes with the bargains in Elk Grove/Laguna, Natomas, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, etc.

I was looking for rent data from the same source comparing rents in Chico v Sacramento. The closest I could come up with was rents in Butte County v Sacramento County. In 2009 the median rent in Butte County was $738 vs $860 for Sacramento County. Rents are higher in Sacramento because incomes are higher.

See source data below.

Other places where I imagine that rents and living expenses for college students would be less than Sacramento would probably be CSU Fresno and CSU Bakersfield assuming that your budget was tight and you were looking for somewhere with a fairly large selection of classes yet still pretty cheap rent.
