What is the best recommended route for driving to big sur from Sacramento? Leaving on Friday afternoon, should I take the I-5 and try to avoid the traffic on 80w?

There are definitely several ways to go , but the way I like heading out of Sacramento is I-5 south down to Los Banos, exit Hwy 152 West going over Pacheco Pass, then shortly after passing Casa de Fruta bear left onto Hwy 156. Stay on 156 for several miles which takes you to Hwy 101 south. Stay on 101 South for a few miles then exit where it says 'to Monterey Peninsula' which will be Hwy 156 again. This will lead directly to Hwy 1. Go south on Hwy 1 passing through Castroville, Marina, Seaside, Monterey, Carmel, then eventually down to Big Sur. I drive this route all the time specifically to Monterey to visit my in-laws and it's almost always 3 hours. Haven't been to Big Sur in a while but I believe it's another 30 minutes or so south of Monterey. Some people like taking 80 west to 680 south to 101 to 1 , but I personally like to avoid driving through San Jose and the Bay Area. I find my way more peaceful and relaxing driving through boring farmland. Whichever route you take Enjoy Big Sur!
