My husband and I will be moving to Salem and living near 14th st NE and D street (just northeast of North Salem H.S.). I'd love to hear from locals what the area is like. I know it isn't the nicest area of town but is it reasonably safe? I walk a lot and do not want to feel in danger when out and about. I have had only a short opportunity to visit and it did not seem too bad. Any information about this general area would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the particular block, but the area seems fine to me. Maybe a bit close to the capitol - if you see a state legislator coming for donations, run for your life!

You can see crime data here by entering an address:

https://www.crimereports.com/

It's the site the city recommends using, so presumably they have a full data set [for Salem].

Beautiful old houses, big trees...I wouldn't feel unsafe walking in that area. Lots of traffic on D street before school starts and again when it gets out in the afternoon, so if you have to go anywhere by vehicle during these times, give yourself a few extra minutes.

14th and Nebraska (two blocks up from D) is the start of the Englewood neighborhood which is a nice area. Where you will be living is just on the outskirts of that. I personally wouldn't have issues living in that area and feeling unsafe.
