Hi everyone! My family and I are looking to move to Oregon from Hawaii, mainly the Salem area and outlying cities. We plan to move within the next few years and I had some questions concerning mixed race families. We are a mixed race family (Japanese, Filipino, Hawaiian, Caucasian, etc) and I am hoping that the area we are looking at is open minded and that there might possibly be other mixed race families similar to ours there so that my children will feel comfortable there. I am aware that racism is anywhere and everywhere, but I'm looking for some insight into how the locals are towards families like ours. My family and I really love how beautiful Oregon is and found the Salem area seemed to offer what we are looking for. We also plan to rent there first before buying house to be sure we can handle the weather in that area as well. So if anyone has an insight about my questions hat would be really helpful! Thanks!

We are also curious about the weather in the Salem area. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

No one (well, almost no one) will have any problems with the racial makeup of your family. Over in the main city-data.com site, there's information about lots of cities, and it says that there are ~ 4,500 mixed-race people here already.

That info is here: https://www.city-data.com/city/Salem-Oregon.html

It also has weather info, including these:

I don't think you will have issues here, but there are jerks everywhere.

Generally fall is gorgeous with temps around 70 or so. Winter tends to be in the 40-50 range, with rainy days. We do get breaks of sun in there, but there are many gloomy days. Spring tends to be fairly rainy and around 50. Summers tend to be in the 80's.

As the previous posters stated, your family's race won't really be an issue. I have family members that are mixed-race (Caucasian/Chamorro) and my teenaged niece has several friends with similar backgrounds.

Aloha!
There is a nice Polynesian community here in Salem and in general I compare Oregon to the Puna District on Big Island. With exception to our 4 seasons, and that we get sometimes quite cold in the winter. But May-October is generally pretty nice!
