We are looking at moving to the Salem area. Prefer living in a Retirement Community, as I am 72 years old. Salemtowne is very affordable and beautiful but don't know anyone there to ask about it. Are there any other Senior Communities in the surrounding areas? Silverton, Dallas, Keizer or ? We possibly would consider a Condo? Thanks

Other than Salemtowne in Salem, and then Woodburn Estates in Woodburn, there aren't any large 55+ communities in the area. They just aren't that popular here like they are in some other states. Corvallis has a big one but it is really expensive. Salemtowne has a website with their activity calendar.

A lot of retirees live in Kooskooskee (more expensive than Salemtowne), and the Battlecreek Condos have a lot of retirees as well. Salemtowne is the more affordable than either of these options though.

You might try Meadowlawn. I knew some people who lived there who loved it.

Apartments in Salem For Rent | Meadowlawn Apartments

It's maybe not in the best part of town, but I visited there a couple of times, and it feels like its own little community. Didn't get that South Lancaster vibe at all.

A lot of mid Valley has really gentrified.
A lot of mid Valley seniors also are snowbirds.
You will be fine with local housing, ranchers anywhere in Salem.

Default 55+ community

Salem Town is old and most houses need remodeling. Dallas has Ceres Gleann. Ceres Gleann in Dallas is very nice. Safe community. Low HOA fee. Some new homes, some being built. None of them old. Some are on golf course or have view of fields that will never be developed.

Jewel, you are right Salemtowne Houses for the most part need updating but are reasonably priced to be able to do that after moving in. Ceres Gleann is very nice but a little over our budget for housing. But you mentioned "safe"-is Dallas safer then Salem? We are in Oregon now Crabbing at Waldport, too much fun.
We are going to the McMinnville-Newberg area next week to look there also to live. We are hoping to decide this trip which city we will be moving to. I would appreciate any feedback on McMinnville-Newberg towns to live? We are retired so commuting is Not an issue for us.

Might want to check out aptmts behind across from Courthouse Fitness Center/near Library. You won't need a car.

Thanks all for the information on Salem. We have decided to buy in Salemtowne within the next year. We like the Northwest part of Salem away from the congestion. The KoosKoosKee Community is nicer then Salemtowne but doesn't have the Socialization opportunities that Salemtowne does. There are more homes that are updated or the price is lower where we can have the work done.
I heard some really negative things about Salem but have found the City to be different so far.

It is because they haven't been to Salem in a while. The city has changed massively in the past decade. The food scene has changed significantly in the last 5-6 years. You are walking into a different city than people that lived there before remember. That's why it is important to visit because some cities improve, like Salem, and others degrade.

We too are looking for senior/ or affordable housing within a one hour radius of Sherwood. We have two Aussie s so we need a yard of some sort and a community that allows dogs. Any suggestions?
