I see this large building on 281 South just before Stone Oak area (right side of road). It looks like it is mostly cement and it has I believe two garages in it but it looks to big to be a private home and in a stange area for a home (right along busy highway). It has temporary mesh fense around it and I dont see people working on it (like it's on hold). I heard it was a Mortuary built to try to stop a toll road on 281.... I think that is cracker's but anybody???

I also heard it was a mortuary, but was stopped due to the uncertainty with the expansion of 281.

You're right. It was going to be a Mission Park funeral home, but construction was stopped because it's going to be in the way of the possible toll roads. It's such an eyesore!

The owners (Dick Tipps) bought the land having been told y TXDOT that the 281 expansion construction would impact the other side of 281 (east side) but if things had changed and his side was impacted that TXDOT would buy back the land and whatever was constructed on it. So Dick Tipps built anyway knowing it would either open or be bought and torn down.

Are you talking about the building across the street from Big Tex gas station off of 281 and Marshall Road?

Does anyone know the status of this building? Obviously no progress has been made, but I would love to know the story behind it.

The last I heard was that they were waiting on Water Main Extension from Bexar Met. I don't know about Sewer Service, either a septic system or SAWS Sanitary Sewer. There is still progress but it is slow.

I have heard like others that he is waiting for the TXDOT 281 Expansion and will sell the property (to TXDOT) for a reported $9 Million Plus. If he has done all this in an attempt to make money it may backfire on him.

Yes, this is sick...but every time I pass that building, I think, "What a great restaurant that place would make."

Last I heard, TxDOT had agreed to buy the building from him. However, when the RMA took over the 281 project, that all got transferred to them, and with everything on hold pending the new environmental study, I actually don't know the status any more.

IMNSHO, he should've known that there was a good chance some right-of-way would be needed for whatever is to come on 281 and shouldn't have built it so close to the existing ROW line. On the other hand, maybe he did know...
