I was driving through Pleasanton today and noticed how many new hotels it has including.

1. Sleep Inn Suites
2. Holiday Inn Express
3. Hampton Inn
4. Microtel Inn & Suites
5. Best Western
6. Savannah Suites
7. La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham
...among other smaller older hotels.

I am curious why Pleasanton, a city of about 10K in Atascosa County, away from the interstate, in a mostly rural area has so many hotels. I'm thinking it's mostly for oil field workers but I might be wrong. Anyone have any ideas? What keeps the rooms full?

You guessed right. The Eagle Ford oil boom caused a construction frenzy down there. Those hotels are not full now though, since it's let up quite a bit in the oil business. Hotels, restaurants, etc sprang up overnight. 2-3 o'clock in the morning, and main street was a traffic jam. Calmed down now mostly.

I helped manage a couple hotels in that area back when oil was big (Hampton - Pleasanton, & La Quinta - Pearsall). Owner's of both those properties even built the new Hampton Inn in Pearsall because of demand.

We had a constant 80% occupancy in the hotels by oil workers, the rest were travelers passing through, etc.

Owner's sold off when it crashed not long ago. Business was good for those small towns for a little while.

Thanks all for the responses I had only passed through Pleasanton via 281 in recent years and hadn't ventured off into the town until this week. I noticed that most of the town's new construction is on HWY 97 between Jourdanton and Pleasanton. There are obviously people with money down there being that it has a good size municipal airport and golf course, but seeing all the newer hotels just wasn't making sense for me. I suppose the intent was for it to be a "hub city" of sorts for the Eagle Ford Shale ?

Pretty much. There isn't much in the way of housing and necessities between Pleasanton and further south and west into the oil fields, so it became a hub for that.
My dad has a house and property down there that we have been getting ready to sell for the last nine months. (he passed away in Feb ).
In 2015, the appraisal value on his house jumped up $100,000 because of the oil boom. We checked with the tax office, and similar increases happened to a lot of properties down there. Good for us, I suppose.
