TXDOT's massive Loop 1604 project is a lot. Here is what to know.
Planned are 10 lanes, 5-lane stacked interchange on one of the most congested corridors in the state.
It will cost $1.4B
That massive project is set to be done by 2027. So, buckle up San Antonio drivers, it’s going to be a long haul.
They are expected to decrease congestion along the busy thoroughfare by 76%.
TxDOT thinks that over the next 20 to 25 years, the amount of daily drivers is expected to double...

I think that more lanes will invite more developments, more people moving in, and it will be an ongoing catch-22.

Building more lanes on IH-10 in Houston didn't solve traffic problem at all.

People are already moving in so less lanes won't help anything either. I-10 through Katy was widened in anticipation of exponential growth so had they not have widened it, it would be that much worse, not to mention more lanes = more throughput, a 2 lane freeway moving at 15 MPH carries far fewer people than a 6 lane freeway moving at 10 MPH. It's not 'build it and they won't come', Austin and Atlanta both tried that .. .. it's 'build it before they come' .. that or end up like Austin and Atlanta which are always playing catchup for growth. San Antonio is doing an amazing job with infrastructure, especially to do so while keeping all lanes toll-free.

As long as they estimate out at least 20 years and build the number of lanes accordingly. No more 4 year construction projects that is already outdated and insufficient once it is completed (like the 1604/151 project).

Like Need4Camaro said if you have driven on 1604 there developments already popping up everywhere.

They should have made it ten lanes all the way to 90 and not just Bandera. All these people, all 2,655,342, need to drive somewhere.

San Antonio is already 26% parking lot - more than other cities (concrete areas). Build more highways and cover with concrete even more spaces. With more highways we will need even more parkings...

I agree in the context of automotive ugliness, problem is for mass transit to be worth the investment, San Antonio would have to grow a whole lot denser and less spread out. Developing patterns would need to change dramatically in order to incorporate more walkability between homes, transit stations or businesses. Some may not see this as a bad thing.. ..and it probably isn't overall, but.. ..it wouldn't be as straight forward as say, replacing a highway project with a railroad project, otherwise you end up like DART, an enormous investment with relatively weak ridership. For the time being, TXDOT is on the right track with widening 1604, but as some said earlier, the scope may be a bit narrow compared to the trajectory of growth.

The NW is an suburban horror show and 1604 is dangerous as all get out. More developments will make it worse. Mass transit doesn't work as there is no central core to focus train lines. From a quiet area there are shootings around all the places we visited and on our once quiet streets as folks moved out and the junk cars appeared in drive ways.

We move out from that mess to a small town. Good riddance.

Rumor has it that all that land north/east of 281 off of 1604 will be up for sale within the next year. More than likely more McMansions built 3 feet from one another or multiple apartment complexes and storage units. We're talking hundreds or maybe thousands of acres, but to me it looks like there is a cement factory in the middle of all of that and also looks like an old quarry.

The concrete plant off O'Connor and 1604 or the big ranch on Bulverde Rd?
