I am going to graduate from nursing within 2 years, and i was wondering whether being an RN in san diego would be enough to afford to live there? Im from chicago, love the city, but sick of winter and i need a change of venue

im single and looking for a apt/condo and maybe house in the future

You should have no problems with either finding work as a nurse or suppoting yourself in San Diego as long as your standards are not set too high. You do have to make some sacrifices to live in a spring, summer, spring again, spring again climate. My wife is a nurse also from Chicago, and she always found work and got good wages there. The rents are probably considerably higher than in Chicago. Good Luck!

You'll be totally fine...probably won't be able to buy a house near the coast or anything, but renting should be no problem. Have fun!

My husband's friend has a nice apartment one block from the beach in San Diego. I think Mission Valley might be even cheaper, maybe. He pays about $1000 for it. He has a decent job at Nassco though. If I can figure out the finances I will be out there living in a flash. I went for a week in March and just everything was so pleasent. Even the freeway seemed so organised compared to the hillbilly south where I've been living for too long. When I turned on my indicator to let me in they just slowed down and let me instead of the racing up beside you that is common here. Also I noticed San Diego to be very female friendly. Not like the good ole boy thing here. Also an old co-worker of mine left this mess to be a nurse in California and has never looked back. She started as a temp and has now bought a home out there. I don't seem able to figure out what I can do yet as I am saddled with a husband who is resisting the move, any move but in your case I think you should give it a try. I have heard too many stories from nurses that took the leap and did fine. As you can see, my social science degree, not so much. Think about it. Best of luck!
PS Saw lots of big hospitals out there as well.

You may need to make some sacrifices as far as the initial nursing unit or shift you take since you are just starting out. Working second/third/split shift or weekends may significantly impact your ability to make friends and to enjoy all of the daytime/evening activities that San Diego has to offer. But you need to pay your dues somewhere so why no San Diego?
