Hi all... my new job will have me relocating with my 7year-old and my mom from san diego to sf by February next year... i really need your advice. Here are the details...
1. I will be going out of town a lot and so we would need a place that is just walking distance to a public middle school, grocery, the Bart, or other public transportation...
2. I will be working at the airport...can drive if there is no public transportation available...
3. My budget would be $1000-$1300 for a one-bedroom
4. Safe neighborhood
I really would prefer the area of Burlingame because it is near the airport and has good schools ( I heard ) but the apartments are pricey...
I humbly appreciate any suggestion or advice!

Hi there! I grew up in San Mateo park, which is right next to Burlingame... it's a great town, but fairly expensive even by our standards. Definitely won't find anything decent for less than $1100-1200! If you want to be near the airport and BART, you should also consider Millbrae, San Mateo, or South San Francisco (independent city, not part of SF itself). They all have slightly better prices, and most of the areas are safe... just try to avoid East San Mateo/Shoreline, and certain parts of SSF aren't wonderful. You could also look into Pacifica, where I lived briefly, though it's a slightly less convenient town. But it's absolutely beautiful, safe, and an easy 10-15 minute drive to SFO.

SFO is actually in the town of San Bruno, which isn't a bad place to live... but I was recently looking at apartments there, and it's more expensive than I thought! It's also very foggy and cold - as are South San Francisco & Pacifica - (which I don't mind, but you might), and parts of it are pretty seedy.

Check on the Bay Area craigslist, and select "Peninsula" to see what's available around here. Anything between SSF and Belmont would be an okay commute to the airport, especially if you're near the 101 freeway. Good luck, and hope this helps!

P.S. Public transportation on the Peninsula kind of sucks, but getting to the airport would be easy (though slow) on SamTrans busses... BART doesn't go south of Millbrae.

Burlingame is a lovely place to live. There is a cluster of apartments on the border of Burlingame and Millbrae which are within walking distance (1 block) of an excellent elementary and middle school (Franklin elementary, Burlingame Intermediate). Also within walking distance to local shops. This is also an easy commute to the Airport (where I worked until June). You can walk to the Millbrae Bart Station (or drive to Bart - parking is free ). The commute on Bart from the Millbrae Bart Station to SFO is 5 minutes (and costs $1.50 each way). Oh, and the neighborhood is very safe. It would be a nice place to call home .

Smile loved burlingame

I lived in Burlingame for 2 years and really enjoyed it.
Where i lived was on Floribunda. There are many apartments in that neighborhood. Also we were 2 blocks from the library and we were 3-4 blocks from the downtown area (Burlingame Avenue). Safeway is also in that area. We were a few blocks (walking distance) from the train.
it's actually the perfect location. San Mateo isn't bad either.
We were paying $1100 for a 1 bedroom apartment (nice, big apartment though).
We moved since we had a baby and couldn't afford it anymore. We're now in Chicago suburbs trying to save money to go back.

Good luck with your move.
