hi blurstar, we'll be renting a house in oakland, off of the keller ave. exit on 580. hopefully this will keep his commute downtown simple.

Yep, it's pretty safe up there too. Driving to downtown is also manageable. That neighborhood has a rather secluded feel; hilly landscape with lots of trees.

It's lovely indeed. Bad people don't like to hike up the hills...

But you rented a house without looking at it first?? How did you even complete the renting process?

Default my husband has a friend out there

my husband's friend lives in lake merritt and she went and checked it out first. once she gave us the 'thumbs up', we mailed off the security deposit and first month's rent. if we hate it the lease is only for 6 months. i'll definitely be checking out the walnut creek area because all of my favorite stores are out there.

Default Best Commute to Downtown Oakland?

Of all the choices for commuting, coming from the Keller Ave. area is one of the best. No tunnels or bridges to cross (or go through), plus the least amount of traffic. The freeway you use would be 580. The Oakland Zoo is near that area, too. It's a small zoo and several years ago was voted one of the worst, but they have really improved and it is now great! Good luck with your move. I commute to downtown Oakland, too, and use 580 to go home.

Default hi judylew

That is really good to hear about the downtown commute from keller ave. Less commute time means more family time for hubby.

asantewaa don't sign a lease longer than 1 year because you will want to move by that time. I commute to Oakland from Castro Valley and it only takes 25 minutes at 7.00 am to downtown and where I live is much safer than Oakland and the schools here are great. W. Creek would have been a great choice for your daughter to go to school as they have a good school system also. Alameda is also a good place to live. It has a great downtown area and is pretty safe. Check out these other communities while you are here and plan not to stay in Oakland to long. The new mayor will be worse than the last one ( Jerry Brown) who has done nothing to imporve the crime in Oakland. Ron Dellums will do nothing either about the crime and over all condition of Oakland. Oakland schools are so bad that the people in the school district have bankrupt the school district. If you want the truth I will give it to you. Good luck.

definitely move out of oaktown before your daughter starts school. The school district was handed over to the state due to mismanagment.
