Thats why I got out!

I would just looks somewhere else honestly or stay put in atlanta.............
If you really want out of ATL then try Dallas, Tx but the Bay Area will only set you back
You got lots of unemployed folks to begin with, then you got top notch Universities like Sanford, Berkeley, San Jose State, UC Santa Cruz and Santa Clara University, all Pumping out more highly educated unemployed folks each semester. So you got all These quality unemployed folks with top notch degrees fighting over the little jobs that are left, its pretty bad. Lot of jobs are leaving the Bay Area because of the anti business California State Government and high cost of living, and High Cost of doing Business, and most of these job are NOT coming back.

And even if you land a job, it will be for lowball pay because of the high number of unemployed folks. Besides the recession, I am starting to think that the anti-business antics and high corporate taxes of the California State Government is what is killing the San Francisco Bay Area / Silicon Valley job market. Companies are laying off, moving operations to cheaper parts of the country and not expanding because of the high corporate taxes and high cost of living and High cost of doing business.
Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bay Area's job market is not what it used to be.

I agree with you and Dallas is very similar to the Bay Area as far as tech companies, etc. Dallas is feeling the effects of the recession but not as much as Bay Area, and homes surrounding Dallas, Plano, are reasonable. Just be careful, if you are California born and raised, you will be in for a shock at how racist many are in South. My biggest gripe most Texans (all the South) is they are mostly Conservative Christians and they are pro-life, as I am, but they have a huge hissy fit if a mother gives life to her baby, and needs help (WIC, food stamps). That is typical Christian hypocrisy. And Texas is full of that. Most Texas are huge on pro-war, really celebrate it, and I guess it is only American children that deserve to live? Most in Texas are anti-gay, and anti-anything but white Christian. If you were born and raised in the Bay Area it can be a huge cultural shock. But the Dallas economy does have more to offer in the way of jobs, and housing costs. Just depends on what you are looking for in your life.

Sounds a bit like selling one's soul and sanity just for a bigger place and a gig.

Dallas metroplex
Weather: very long hot and humid summers, 100 days >100 degree weather, humid day and night, 99 at night. A/C runs 24hrs April - September, its not a luxury..its survival. $300 - $400/month on electric bills for 2500sq ft house. Summer is indoors all day for kids, too hot for outside activities. Its been 103 -105 at 6pm past few weeks.
Schools: They say schools a good, that's relative..compared to who..East Coast? ...new buildings but the standards are not as high..yes even in Collin county's nice neighborhoods.
Diversity: minorities are tolerated...not accepted. You know your place and they usually don't make any bones about it.
Yes many Christians, there are corners with a different church in each, but little tolerance for otherwise. Some KKK activity about 40miles north of Dallas downtown if that tells you anything.
Southern hospitality is 1 cell layer deep only, IMHO.
Anyways...good place to get you education, get kids out of daycare, but if you want your kids to be well rounded and +ve exposure to culture, science and tech and challenging education system....go East or West Coast areas if you can afford it or make the sacrifice.

I will take a smaller house...and better weather anyday....btw...high levels of antidepressant use ......hmmph.....

btw..typical conversation at lunch in my office.....to minority workmate....'not to be offensive but'....or 'I know my dad was racist but he always paid them fair wages'.....or my parents are racist......
after a while this gets old......and this is one of the best places I have worked...

However, if you need a job in oil and gas fieldwork......we have more jobs than we can fill

I'd say Dallas vs. Bay Area is more like trading one brand of insanity for another.
