I misposted this in the general SF forum and it was suggested that I would be better to post here with my question. I am going to be working in Mountain View and am a single older woman with no kids or pets so would like to find a relatively quiet place in a safe area that is affordable. I would love to be in MV but am seeing that it is a bit expensive but it looks like San Jose may be doable. Could you folks suggest some safer areas of San Jose and what areas should I avoid? Thanks for your help.

If you are in Mountain View, I would really try to live closer than San Jose, unless you're working off-hours, because the commute from even the closest parts of San Jose without benefit of a carpool lane would be a real headache.

If it were me, I'd look in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Redwood City (reverse commute). You want to avoid the 101 North at all costs, but even 280N/85N route is slow if you cannot carpool. Since you have no pets and wouldn't need a big place, I'd keep looking closer to work. Craigslist is the best place to find rentals in this area. If you are still committed to San Jose, check the West part, it's safe and closest, but likely not really that much cheaper b/c of the schools (everything here depends upon schools/school districts)...or Campbell. IMHO, avoid North & East San Jose. South is okay, but really really really far to commute to Mountain View, I wouldn't recommend it at all. Check www.crimereports.com for specifics on crime.

Good luck!

Hey there - can you share a budget with us? I live in Mountain View myself and can provide some suggestions but budget and desired unit type (house? apartment? how many beds/baths?) can help us give better guidance .
