I noticed on the map there appears to be one bridge with a turning point (I forgot the name) for ships to pass that may have been partially removed and looks like railway? Then another which ends at what looks like a gazebo (from sky view, obviously it probably isn't).

Does anyone know anything about these or the names of them? I am just curious about the history but my googling hasn't turned up anything yet.

Thanks.

ETA...in case anyone else is curious, I did find reference to the Dumbarton Rail Bridge:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumbart...on_Rail_Bridge

And apparently the other strange-looking thing is an aqueduct!

Yes, the old Southern Pacific Railroad and the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, respectively.

If you go further down towards the bay point, you'll also see another rail bridge. I believe it is used by the ACE rail to get between Fremont and Santa Clara.. it goes through the slough, by a ghost town called Drawbridge and then through Alviso.

Yes, that Union Pacific route is still frequently traveled, passenger and freight alike.

Also, just north of the Dumbarton is the remains of an old wooden destroyer which broke loose from it's moorings and went aground in the area. It was the USS Thompson. USS Thompson (DD-305) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We used to race our sailboats out of Redwood City and used the wreck as a turning mark.

Hmm did not know it was a bridge before. Sad that this did not manage to make it to a commuter rail.

It's still being considered.

I always wondered why CalTrain didn't have service out that way to Fremont, and why the Fremont BART Station was not placed a bit further north so it could junction with the railway.

I think their funding is moved to Warms Springs BART station and the project is on hold for an indefinite period of time.
