Do you think I could grow a redbud in Santa Fe -- more specifically, Nambe, which is about 6,000 feet?

if so, where might I buy one?

Thanks for any assistance.

Devin, I think you could, although some redbuds won't make it that high/far north. I believe the Western & Oklahoma Redbuds will survive in Hardiness Zone 6, but not 5 which is probably where you are. You'd probably want an Eastern Redbud, which is rated down to a zone 5. Don't know about it's drought tolerance...

I bought an Oklahoma Redbud for ABQ last fall, and he made it through the winter down there just fine. They were on sale @ Lowe's for about $15.

Thanks -- what is the difference between the types?

I don't really have a lot of experience with them, Devin. I only learned that there are different varieties when I bought the Oklahoma redbud last year, and have no experience with the western variety. But I do know they look pretty spectacular in the spring, and the purple flowers come out early for both the eastern and oklahoma varieities.

Tim,

Thanks for this information. I loved the redbud trees in Kansas, and I have wondered if any varieties will grow here in Santa Fe.

Next time I am at High Country Gardens I will check with them....they are the experts on what will grow here.

I found both eastern and oklahoma at Nature Hills Nursery Eastern Redbud

and you are right the eastern tolerates cold better. It is also the color I am used to, so I will probably order on-line.
