I'm in the market for a new dining room set but every furniture store that I go to has such poorly made furniture I just can't bring myself to buy anything. I stopped into one of the Amish Furniture showrooms in Sarasota and the tables were gorgeous and the prices were fine for us but I came home without buying because I wanted to look at their reviews.

The reviews were confusing because one of the two major stores has horrible reviews and the other store has great reviews - but they seem to be owned by the same person. So has anyone bought this type of furniture? Are you glad that you did?

Have you considered a "buy nothing or free cycle" site on FB? ie: "Buy Nothing sarasota" There are so many people that can't give away dining room sets or older/well built furniture and wind up putting them out on the curb. You may get lucky? Marketplace also has many item for reduced prices that are perfectly fine.

I would look on Craigslist. It is usually loaded with beautiful furniture sets at cheap/reasonable prices. Several years ago I bought a gorgeous heavy dining table and four chairs for $100, and this was originally a $3,000 set (forgot the brand)

I wouldn't be comfortable going to a stranger's house to look at furniture but I have checked out some thrift stores. The problem is I'm looking for something contemporary and it's rare to find contemporary furniture in them. I have done really well with glassware though.

I've bought a few small pieces (end tables and patio furniture) from Room and Board that I'm really happy with but buying a dining room set is too important to me to buy online without seeing it first. The closest Room and Board is in Atlanta.

I was pleasantly surprised to see such beautiful contemporary dining sets at the Amish stores. They did have a lot of Shaker and Mission style too. I'm going to have to go back and take another look. There was one modern set that was a real standout - solid wood, beautifully finished, priced well.
