I have live here my whole life the only thing i agree with on you is the SCAD part. Driving- your talking about out near pooler at that parkway yea there are wrecks there because that where so many transplants live and aren't from here and its a busy interesection. litsen to reports how many wrecks a day on the islands are there, like 1-2 a week unless at night like after mid-night cause of a drunk driver. And schools south effingham is EFFINGHAM not savannah. public schools yea for the most part other than the islands new highschool suck. But in SVANNAH you have good private schools like bendictine, saint vincents, savannah christian, country day. My brother went to school here and is now a succesful doctor and other friends who are very succesfull too. you get out what you put in. and the housing yea it fluctuates but on the island i know from experience because im about to move but you can find 2 bed 2 bath for 700+ month on the islands and houses for 170,000. from what im reading you are talking about pooler. if that person would move to say wilmington island where i live rent a 1bed 1bath for 750 a month in a good complex and work at memorial or candler its a 15-20 min. drive and no I-16, 516, pooler parkway or I-95

So, local Savannahians, what neighborhoods or surrounding towns would you recommend to someone wanting to relocate to Savannah. Looking for safe location to build retirement home.

Ok I am going to education advice from this guy. Did you actually try and read what he wrote/typed? He couldn't even spell Savannah correctly in all caps.

I highly recommend RICHMOND HILL an upscale suburb about 20 minutes south of SAV. You can still get decent waterfront property there (river or marsh views) for a nice price. The other option on the South Carolina side of Savannah is Bulffton and Hilton Head Island which are WAAAAAYYY too crowded, touristy and expensive - might as well live in Florida.

My husband and I have lived in Savannah since 2007. We are in our late 20's and have a daughter. We also like to hear good music, drink good beer and eat good food (he is a chef). With all that said, Savannah has been a great place for us and our personality. The only down side is that there isn't as much to do as you would think from a tourist's view. THere are fun, touristy things to do, but beyond that- there isn't much. We are actually moving to Atlanta this spring to have more to do. It is a beautiful city and if you don't have children and can enjoy the nightlife, it can be a lot of fun. Be careful where you rent. Streets can be hit or miss downtown. Don't rent sight unseen. Best of luck.

Are you kidding me? Transplants are much better drivers than these drivers from southeastern Georgia. The way the "natives" drive, would get them killed in Atlanta, Washington D.C., New York, et cetera. "Natives" have no idea what a yield sign is or means. They have no idea that slower traffic should be in the righthand lanes for faster traffic to pass them on the left. Cars must not be sold with directional signals as an option because "natives" don't use them or have no idea what they are. By the way, Pooler Parkway is not anywhere close to being considered a busy intersection...

South Effingham is considered part of the Savannah metro area. Savannah area schools are decent. Nothing more, nothing less. Congratulations to your brother for being successful, but one or a few success stories don't mean that the schools here are great. Heck, the top 25+% of my graduating class, when I was in high school, scored over a 1400 on the SAT. It is surprising here when the valedictorian scores more than a 1200. It is a complete waste of money for people to have to spend $10,000+ to send their children to a private school to get a decent education.

I would recommend visiting Savannah, but not living here...

If you are looking to retire, I would suggest living in South Carolina...

HEY WNCBADWOLF -- With your very obvious, very aggressive bias toward Northerners, I don't think you're gonna like it much in Savannah. Would be a shame to move all the way down here and find out it's just like Asheville, without the mountains. We have lots of transplants from far off places like South Florida (yikes!) and New York (oh my Gawd!). Savannah is home to THOUSANDS of hippy granola art kids who rarely bathe and wear their pants low on their butts. We also have a large population of gays and lesbians with dogs.

Of course, we do have GREAT weather. Today was a BEAUTIFUL 78 degrees with bright sunshine. But on my walk thru a VERY crowded Forsyth Park (must have been 1,000 people there at 5 pm) I didn't hear ONE SOUTHERN ACCENT. What I did hear was lots of YANKEE accents and languages I couldn't understand. Yep, thar's a lot uh foreigners in Savannah! Even the sweet little 91 year old Jewish man and his wife I stopped to talk with who have lived here all their lives sounded like they just arrived from Manhattan. OY VEY!

Yep, you probably aren't gonna find your kind here -- maybe you should look in Arkansas or Mississippi?

Just curious about the medical field in the city. I am currently a CNA & would be wanting to find work as a CNA in what ever medical facility I could find. As for the Hospitals, how hard is it to get on to one of them as a CNA, which hospital is better, what kind of pay could a CNA expect to earn. Here in Asheville the hospital will not hire a CNA without having at least 5 years experience, they also are the highest paying in all of Western NC, a CNA there can expect to start at $9 an hour. Nursing homes typically start their pay around $8 an hour.

Last month money magazine put out a list of the top 10 worse places to get a job, Asheville & all of WNC was tied at #4 on that list. On average every job opening in WNC has 350 applicants, all of which are just as qualified as anyone else if not more so.

What about housing. What is the typical rent for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment, duplex, carriage house, etc...I prefer an older place & not a new condo, town house or apartment complex. History & architecture are 2 of the main things that attract me to the city. In Asheville & WNC the typical rent for a 1 bedroom apartment (600 sq ft or less) is $800, for a 2 bedroom (over 600 sq ft) is typically $900 to $1100. A house can be as low as $800 but those houses are usually in bad areas or in need of some major repairs, rent for a house can go as high as $5000 a month.

One of the other main reasons I am so drawn to Savannah is that at it's roots it is still & will always be traditionally southern. Asheville may be in the south but it is far from southern any more. When I visit Savannah I alway have to eat at places like Ms Wilkes & Clary's. In Asheville there are no places like that any more. We only have 3 restaurants that claim to serve southern food, 2 of them serve all organic meats & vegetables, 1 of those 2 have a huge vegetarian & vegan section of the menu, the other one serves goat cheese grits with basil with every dish, the only potato on the menu is mashed sweet potatoes & sweet potato pancakes & for desert they serve flourless cakes. Those 2 mentioned above have never had anything on their menu like, macaroni & cheese, fried okra, chicken & dumplings or fried squash, neither of them never even serve fried chicken, but yet they call themselves southern, one of them refers to itself as "southern inspired"

Asheville's population is hugely northern in nature. Every year thousands of yankees move here. To them those 2 restaurants are pure southern. Also Asheville has a huge population of people from out west. Those people are the ones that are making Asheville so "green". Most restaurants in the area only serve organic or all natural foods & a HUGE price to go along with it. The place I mentioned above that serves goat cheese grits with basil with every dish. The cheapest item on their menu is $15 & that is for a small piece of free range, corn fed, boneless chicken breast, that is coated with a mix of chopped pecans & almonds, served with goat cheese grits with basil & mashed cauliflower.

A few other things I was curious about. In Savannah do people ever gather in town somewhere to do protest marches, picket line &/or rallies of some kind? In Asheville that is a VERY common thing. It happens all the time. I am so tired of trying to go to wal-mart just to pick up toilet paper or aspirin & seeing a huge group of people out there picketing wal-mart & calling it "the beast" or trying to drive thru down town & have people charge at me wanting me to sign a petition to anything from legalizing marijuana to stop a company from opening a new store somewhere in town.

I have always loved Savannah but I know living in a town is completely different that visiting a place while on Vacation. Would anyone be willing to take the time & tell me all the things about what living there is really like.

I DO NOT want a sugar coated version, I DO NOT want only positive things. What I do want is the truth. I want to hear all the wonderful things & all the horrible things. I want to hear from the locals, the people who are born & raised in Savannah & I want them to tell me what they truly think about people, not from Savannah or even Georgia moving into their city. I want to hear from people who have moved there & have loved every min of it & I want to hear from those who have moved there & have completely hated every moment & wish they could get out of town. I want to hear the complete & brutal truth. Hold NOTHING back.
You think green and organic is bad? You think northerners are ruining your town? Wow, you have such a close-minded mentality. I live in Richmond, VA surrounded by people like you (people who think fine cuisine is fried pickles at the local Galaxy Diner, and that variety is Bob's Curbside Grill versus Starlight BBQ or whatever...) and I friggin hate it!

I would do anything to get away from this hellhole of close-minded, cliquish people. There's no variety here! Variety is the spice of life.
