Does anybody know of any off the beaten path areas south of seattle, within about 20-25 minutes or so from west seattle, where I can walk around through the woods with my dog off leash? I am looking for some alternative to going as far as Tiger or Squak Mountains. I have found that those places actually takes more like 45 minutes or so to actually get to. I am hoping to find a few standby places where I can go after work or the weekend - get my pup some exercise and not spend 1/2 the day doing so...

I am also not talking about going to Lincoln Park - I am there all the time and it is not really conducive to off leash (I know people do it, particularly in the early a.m. - I see them when I run through there early). I am looking for something a bit out of the way, and not a dog park... Are there any alternatives around Renton, Burien or even south of there? I am hoping to find some public land that is away from roads/cars and where it is actually OK to have a well behaved dog off leash, and big enough to kill an hour or to walking/hiking around. Does that exist here? I am pining for my old home of Burlington, Vermont - I could actually get away within 20 minutes or so and find some big wooded parks...

Thanks

You could try Seahurst Park, Discovery Park (not on the weekends), Seward Park. Generally it's expected that you keep your pet on leash (of course, people will do it without anyways).

Those are exactly the places I am trying to avoid. I am trying to find something further out - something between actually going up to the near mountains, but not one of the city (or even Burien) parks. Maybe it doesn't actually exist, but that is why I am posting - to find out...

The trails going up the hill from Seahurst Park are a perfectly pleasant place to have an offleash dog. My dog loves it there. Eagle Landing Park in Burien is usually empty. Westcrest Park has an offleash area, but it also has trails in the woods that are mostly deserted. The Des Moines Creek trail is also pretty empty, and wooded. Saltwater State Park has some real empty spots. And Fauntleroy Park in West Seattle, not far from Lincoln, has wooded trails but few people. Schmitz Park is usually a fine place for an offleash dog. 68th Ave S in South Seattle(Lakeridge) has "Dead Horse Canyon" just a block west of Pulcinella Pizza. You can't go for a really long walk there, and there's only parking for one or two cars, but it's pretty and empty.
