or within a short drive? Is there a better time of year to see them? Or do we have to go to Alaska!?

I remember as a kid seeing them in northern Michigan. My kids would like to experience them!!

Yes, I've seen them twice from the Seattle area, but only as a green glow on the horizon and as I recall both times in the summer. You can search for "aurora forecast" to see the forecasted viewing area. Only rarely will it be theoretically visible from the Seattle area (i.e. this far south), and then you have to be lucky it's not overcast!

I once saw them as far south as Northern Illinois, lasted almost 3 hours just after sunset! Just depends on how big the solar event was.

Ever? Yes. Likely? No. I've seenough them once in 30 years, even last year when there was supposed to be a huge event so large the news was reporting on it but in the end it wasn't visible in the Seattle area. If you want a good chance to see them you'll need to go much further north.

I've seen them from Everett a few times. Once at a drive in movie. They're not colorful here, but shifting lights in the north horizon on a late summer evening.

For this very purpose, I've spent the night a couple times curled up in my sleeping bag on top of Mt Pilchuck, in Snohomish County east of Granite Falls. I did see them once. They weren't brilliant but I was pretty happy.

Too much light pollution around the Seattle metro area. Maybe if you went up on Tiger Mt. you could get a glimpse. You can see them much clearer on Whidbey Island, the San Juans, or to the north, in Skagit County. The NW Cable News (NWCN) Facebook site has posted many Aurora images from this winter/spring in those areas. It will really depend on recent solar activity and just how prominent the Aurora is.
