My mother, age 87, was a community resource during Katrina. She taught people how to use a non-flush toilet, safely dispose of garbage, etc. We used shower curtains to make an outside shower on our clothes line. We had the only clothes line in the community. You would not believe how many people we met once word was out that we had a shower!

We pinned the shower curtains across and down 2 lines of the clothes line. The person stood on a pallet to shower. A watering can supplied the water. Wet down, soap down, rinse. Each person brought their own water, or we would supply it for the first shower. (we filled large garbage cans and tied them to the fence before the storm)

When I was younger, I laughed at the saying 'older and wiser'. During Katrina, I watched people doing things the hard way and realized that the longer you live, the smarter you get about living!

Just for that you'll have to come over and clean off my computer screen.

This is a good thought--we should all be learning skills as fast as we can b/c even if we never use them we'll need to teach them to the young'ns and it might be your only ticket in the door to safety if you have a lot of useful knowledge. I'm afraid that people will just be so clueless and so stressed out that they'd be unable to think straight but I think there'll be some pleasant surprises as well and the older folks can be a huge help.

The best prep for the elderly is to have raised your children with kindness so that they still like you, and to have raised them to be educated and responsible.

If you did not do that, it is too late now.

I don't have children because I never wanted them; now my wife is dead so I'm alone.

But I've acquired plenty of knowledge as well as what I need in a material way. People without kids avoid a lot of expenses. If they used their money wisely they're in good shape.

I'm just a bit past my prime also, at age 75, and I can't do the hiking with a heavy backpack like I once could. I've been storing food for awhile, but my supply of usable water isn't what it should be. I live with in five miles of a huge lake, but I couldn't drink the water from that lake with out processing it in some way. I've bought quite a supply of Mountain House freeze dried food and have roughly a years supply of food in my home. I've also bought Mountain House food to eat while in hunting camp, and while camping in general, just to see what it would be like to have to survive on it. Mountain House Food is made in Albany, Oregon, which is located a few hours North of my home. I bought the food from a company by the name of Emergency Essentials, they not only sell freeze dried food, they sell other supplies for those of us who want to be self sufficient. I have generators and fuel to run them, but if worst comes to worst, none of this stuff will last forever. I asked my doctor about buying a years supply of drugs and he kind of poo-pooped the idea and said it wasn't necessary. He told me to get a good supply of aspirin, but didn't have much to say about high blood pressure meds. I suppose it is possible that blood pressure would go down if we got more exercise, that was his feelings. I think you reach a point in later years when your health will determine how much longer you are going to live. I have kidney failure, and while I'm not yet on dialysis, one of these days I will be. When that happens if the SHTHF there is a good chance that I will also.

I would like to recommend a book by James Wesley Rawles titled Patriots (a novel of survival in the coming collapse). This book is about some people living together and making the best of a bad situation during a time of collapse. The author writes a blog on survival called SurvivalBlog dot com that I have read for years, he has some very good information to help anyone who is interested.

Default This is the right kind of thread for us.

I posted today just to bring this thread back so we could see what a real survival thread should be. There's not one post even remotely attacking or insulting a member. There's no attack on survivalism itself or squealing about the glories of socialism. Rather, there's a courteous and very informative exchange of ideas and experiences that can benefit everyone who reads it whether they post or not.

I'm so sick of a few people who insist on bringing politics into everything. There's another forum for that. I was savagely attacked, for example, because I had parents who took responsibility for my upbringing and gave me the best they could. I guess my attackers believe that government is the only fit parent and mine should have spent their time divorcing, using street drugs, and trying to find every available government program.

Let's talk about food, investments, security, and everything else that's useful for people interested in self-sufficiency and preparedness.

Here's a start; let's look at three very useful but very different kinds of survival knives. Amazon has the first two.

Networking with like minded younger folks who would take you into the fold if circumstances warranted it.

My current circle of close family and friends includes a few single older folk that I maintain close ties with and there is an understanding if something were to happen they would be looked in on at the least and taken in at the most.

My Father, Uncle and I maintain a list of these individuals. These are the two men that have taught me the most in my life even when I didn't realize it. Lucky me, I know.

But how many are you willing to support and for how long? Won't you expect some sort of payment? What you're describing seems ideal for a very tightly knit family group but I don't see how it could become widespread.

Younger people generally have fewer resources as well as good reason to use those resources for themselves. During periods of severe societal dislocation I believe that the vast majority of the old (and I'm one of them) will either provide for themselves or die. Old people do have an advantage,a decreasing empathy for others. The capable old man and woman will shoot first, even as a precaution. Looters will kill many of them but they'll kill many looters.

Rural areas will be better. Locals will kill refugees and be willing to net some extra fish for the elderly. Right now, I can easily catch enough fish for myself on a line. With a net or weir it would be easy enough and probably quicker to catch three times as many. There are more than enough fish where I live.

But old people do need to stock up and be willing to make the effort. Otherwise, friends, neighbors, and even family will come to view them as nothing but undesirable parasites. Eskimos would put the old and useless on ice floes and send them into the sea. I'm sure that our society will be just as imaginative.
