Yes, indeed. 4th century Rome had water and sewer systems, heated public bathhouses, competent surgeons, heliograph networks, and paved rural roads. The literacy rate was over 50% The 4th century also saw currency debasement, rampant sexual deviancy, particularly among the elite, legal immigration of aliens (the Roman army was over half foreign just as the US Army is today among enlisted and becoming closer and closer among officers), a huge welfare class, and ghastly street crime. The Romans had once ruled the world, but in the 5th century the empire collapsed. In the 6th century the city of Rome was an inconsequential backwater.

Life expectancy in 4th century Rome wouldn't be equaled again until the late 19th century.

Funny, ain't it, how history goes 'round and 'round in cycles, and where she stops, only the wise can see!

You're right of course, but this is never going to happen. Never. The tentacles of corruption and power are wrapped too tightly around our government by those who stand to benefit or lose, according to what policies they make. These politicians will lie to you at every turn to get into office, and I don't care which party or people they say they represent. They all go to the same "club" to play golf on the weekends. We, the people (or the grassroots so to speak), are expendable. I give you credit for continuing to have faith in our system. I did too for a long time. Then one day, it hit me in the face what is really going on. This is not paranoia. "Paranoid" was a label given to Germans, even well respected and educated leaders in the community, that questioned Hitler as he slowly rose to power. I'm not at all comparing our situation in this country to the Holocaust, don't get me wrong. Often though, we don't want to see things we don't want to accept, because changes we don't want to make are going to have to be made. Or because, "it's never been that way before". It's our nature to want to believe that everything will work itself out. Sometimes we need to step out of the comfort of the "flock" and start heading in the other direction. This is my current view.

It's rare nowadays for people to "act civically" (as in, civics).

The religion of tolerance is at the front of peoples' minds, which means the dulling of conscience and moral instinct.

A few staple foods have already shot up in price -- think chicken.

If you can think of some ways in which things need to get worse before they can get better, those would also count as examples. You can ask yourself what makes you distrust people in certain situations - what might an opportunist do? Ask yourself what would have to become impossible before you could trust the person wouldn't do it.

Some of that uncivil behavior is hidden and malicious.

Any opinions how much worse things will get in the next 5 or 10 years?
