Just curious if anyone here is from NJ? I didn't get a response from my question in the Rural and Small Town subforum. I was wondering if there are any preppers from NJ and if so, where do you live? Are places like Warren, Hunterdon, or Sussex county good places to be when the SHTF?
I currently live in the south and am originally from NJ. I think about moving back often. I want to live in Western Jersey closer to the PA border. The land is great for growing a small garden.
I am a teacher and my husband works remotely.
New Jersey is a great place to live. If that is where you want to be, go for it. Keep in mind that your property taxes will probably increase tenfold over what you are paying now.
I live in Sussex County. For NJ, it’s decent (and the parts that have remained undeveloped are beautiful — but the development is everywhere), but I would never move back here from another state. They’ve raised our gas tax twice in the past two years (we’ve gone from one of the cheapest gas prices to one of the most expensive). Sussex County is the land that time forgot by our representatives (which can sometimes be good) but has been “discovered” by the refugees from the more expensive counties “down below”. And then they move up here and they complain about how we don’t have Target or Trader Joe’s. Plus there are no good-paying jobs so everyone has an hour commute (at least) and the local roads are only one lane each way — so you can imagine what happens. We can’t wait to get out of here. I would never recommend NJ for a rural lifestyle. Property taxes are insane. Feel free to message me if you have more specific questions.

I'm from the pines of south jersey. Left at 25. If I had to come back it would be Salem Cape May Atlantic or Cumberland county where things are affordable and snow isn't brutal. Often times the nor'Easters miss this part of the state.
North and near the Delaware Water Gap or along the NY State border be a good place. It is very hilly, and craggy terrain, which is good for protection. It is heavily wooded, so places to hide.
And there will always be plenty of water. It is elevated too so not so humid in summer. As for the winter there is plenty of firewood around.
If civilization collapses, the game animals will take over again so plenty of meat. As for fish you are close enough to ocean to make occassional trip, and there is plenty of fresh water fish around too.
All in all NJ has some splendid natural beauty. Everyone thinks its urban/suburban, but still plenty of open space left.
