I was informed of something I was totally unaware of. I already knew that FedEx is non-union and uses contractors. What I didn't know was that during covid, FedEx relaxed the rules so that even with items requiring a signature, it is UP TO THE INDIVDUAL DRIVER whether to follow those rules or not, and where the package is delivered. They are required to take a photo of the package that has been delivered.
There are FedEx drop-off locations if you don't trust a driver to put a package in a safe place. Some of those are Dollar General stores. When I inquired at one, the employee confessed to not knowing how that worked, even as I saw FedEx packages loose behind the counter.
I leave it to you how you want to proceed after learning this.
That first year of COVID was a trip. With the no knock or ringing the bell least you pick up the corona virus by contact. The only time that was like it was the 2001 anthrax mail bombs.
In the years since they have tried to get back to the old rules of requiring signatures and alerting you. But delivery folks had gotten used to drop and run before contact was made. In partnering with local retailers as a delivery point to thwart the porch pirates FedEx is following the example of Amazon
I have never had a special option "Signature Required" package delivered without a signature. I have had many packages delivered where they just dropped and rang the bell but did not make me sign anything like in the old days. However, if the sender added (and paid for) the "Signature Required" option, believe me they always made me sign either at initial delivery or via a return delivery attempt authorization slip.

I've gotten around this by leaving a note on the door with my full name and signature. They take it with them when they go, and leave the package.
