As far as hidden gems goes, I would suggest considering Aiken, Greenwood, Florence, and the Seneca-
Clemson-Anderson area. People who prefer bigger cities generally don't like these towns which is part of the reason I like them. Greenville and Charleston have been attracting many people in recent years that have a pretentious "to the manor born" personality, in my view. They love downtown Greenville, downtown Charleston, Mt Pleasant, Hilton Head but are generally not happy with the areas outside of those.
Aiken, Greenwood, Florence. But oh so VERY hot several months out of the year in those places. Do like the upper parts of SC like Seneca that you mentioned.

There's really no difference between Seneca Clemson in the summer. Winters are probably a little colder with more precipitation in Seneca.
Walhalla has an interesting historical twist involving one of the two major groups of German immigrants, but Pickens still makes the most sense with its shorter drive to Greenville and probably better schools.we are planning our escape from Easley which is about to become the next Simpsonville. As I write this I’m sitting in a rural community on Winyah Bay south of Georgetown SC.
