Two young women were killed by drunk drivers in downtown Charleston near the port. The second drunk hit them 30 minutes after the first one. He rode onto the sidewalk.

Charleston is doing DUI checkpoints downtown now.

Downtowns need to have safety barricades between sidewalks and the road.

It has a Pickle Bar. That sounds fun.
The idea with Nexton is for residents to not have to leave the development for everything. A new Harris Teeter is about to open there.

The legislature needs to get serious and busy pronto. The DOT has jurisdiction over what happens to the vast majority of roads within municipalities.

Also, there’s a letter to the editor in The Post and Courier today that touches on a subject not mentioned in news reports about the hit and runs. I had noticed it wasn’t mentioned myself.

The subject is poor lighting, poor street markings, and the absence of a sidewalk. The cross I saw where the hit and runs happened is on a curve. I don’t even know how drunk one has to be to fail to make that curve if driving too fast. If someone is walking there with their back to traffic under poor lighting, it’s a tragedy waiting to happen.

I don’t know if the two young women were walking in that manner. I’m just saying.

Clairvoyance-

Fresh off the press this morning:

“Developers knew well-worn dirt paths that acted as makeshift sidewalks and “mud holes” at places where bus stops should stand wouldn’t suffice as they planned to build a massive luxury apartment complex and retail space along Morrison Drive.

“They envisioned sidewalks along both sides of the bustling four-lane road, covered bus stops to shelter public transportation users, a quiet zone for the nearby railroad, a traffic light and crosswalk at the street closest to the complex and a new pedestrian connection to the nearby Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

“But after nearly six years of planning, only some of these improvements have come to fruition.

“The South Carolina Department of Transportation, which owns Morrison Drive, has not approved an additional traffic light and crosswalk at Johnson Street, the road that splits the Morrison Yard office space and the apartment complex in two.

“The state department told The Post and Courier earlier this month that it has no plans to add a traffic light, despite developers, residents and some neighborhood leaders arguing the addition is essential.”

Better lighting is needed. Most cites in the northern states that have high foot traffic has really good lighting.

For someone to get hit and lay there and no on sees them is due to poor lighting. There is still a good amount of cars out on the roads especially on weekend after 2am. Someone should of seen them within a 30min span

“Widening highways does not fix traffic. So why do we keep doing it?”

Because it's cheaper than adding alternative routes

According to news sources, they were struck and killed on Morrison Street near the on-ramp to the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge while walking in or alongside a bike lane. Along the stretch between the bridge and the new Morrison Yard development on that side of the road, there isn't a sidewalk.

A must-see new video from an urban planning viewpoint - It just happens to be about Charleston. There’s an ad about halfway through.
