There have been a number of inquiries on this forum about safety and crime in South Dakota. The Hot Springs Star, this week, has published a list of the safest Cities in South Dakota. The list was compiled by a Real Estate Broker in San Mateo, Calif. They based their rankings on info available in the 2010 census and the FBI Uniform Crime Report. Number one on the list was Brookings with Brandon as a close second. Hot Springs was ranked third with Lead and [would you believe] Sturgis in 4th and 5th. Of the violent crimes reported for Hot Springs, all were assaults meaning there were no murders, no rapes, & no robberies reported for the year.

I am pretty sure they had to cut some very fine hairs for the rankings.

I would totally believe Sturgis being on that list. Most of the crimes that do occur are not violent. The rally is a two week ordeal and the other fifty weeks of the year Sturgis is a very sleepy town.

The rally is about the only reason and justification for Sturgis to exist, IMO.
