I was in Pierre and I could not believe how many cars were parked at a gas station/casino. As I pulled in I thought this is going to take awhile, but the gas station was nearly empty. It seemed everyone was parked there just for the casino.
So what’s up with all the tiny casinos? I’m not a gambler.
It is a money maker for the c-stores and the state.
It's a money maker for the c-stores. I kind of question if it really is a money maker for the state with the lost sales taxes thrown in these machines instead of being available to buy items. Not to mention the multiple social problems this causes.
I call it a blight on our state. The state's addicted now to the "easy" money so it's here to stay.

I could find a lot of other things to do vs. paying the stupid tax at the casino.
Fishing, hunting in season, drinking and gambling are about the extent of things to do in Pierre. Anymore, I have a game of avoiding my ex wife and her ilk. It is usually a week at a time, going for coffee, and supper wanting Walmart or Runnings.
In Wisconsin only the indian tribes can operate casinos which means you have fewer, much nicer, larger casinos. Personally I prefer it that way and I never frequent the local small town casinos that any old person can throw together in South Dakota. I go to Royal River and Grand Falls and that's pretty much it (and that's in Iowa come to think of it). Is it fair for the indians to have that kind of power in WI? I don't know but it makes for a nicer casino and not so many all over the place.
On the other hand, if casino revenue keeps a state income tax away, I'm all for it. Let the gamblers **** their money away so I don't have too.
I remember NO casinos. Then, local legislatures campaigned for limited gambling in the existin "saloons and gambling halls" in Deadwood. Kind of bring back the old one arm bandits. Would increase tourist trade. They wanted very limited trade like Nicole and quarter, antique machines. What they got, was more, but it was limited to Deadwood Lead area. Immediately, when it passed, the rest of the state started screaming, unfair, what makes them special? Aren't we part of the same state? The rest is history. My folks still lived there and I limited my visits because of all the casinos making Rapid City so trashy. IMO, it was the worst thing that ever happened to South Dakota, and specially the Black Hills. People say, just don't go in the casinos. Its not that simple. How do you not look at the millions of signs, or all the neon, or the added traffic?
I wonder how much revenue they actually bring in? Schools are broke and getting worse. Teachers are some of the most underpaid in the country. Highways are scraping money from everything. Are the reservations any better off? Where is the money going?
