So, I need to buy a used vehicle.

Looking on-line, I find the make/model/drive etc that I want in Minnesota and Nebraska right now, but not in SD.

Are there disadvantages (taxes?) to buying a vehicle out of state? If so, which would be worse - MN or NE?

Or does it not matter?

Or, since I live here, should I wait until the vehicle I want becomes available in SD?

(Since I live East River, just in terms of gas mileage costs it would be cheaper for me to drive to many places in IA, MN or NE than to drive to many places West River).

Thanks for your advice!

It shouldn't matter. I'm not too familiar with SD sales tax laws nor those in NE, MN or IA, but normally you'll pay sales (use) tax to your own home state/county/town, NOT to the state where you buy the vehicle. I live in Wyoming and have bought many cars in SD and one in MT. Taxes go to my state. Hopefully, if I'm wrong somebody will correct me!

The Treasurer's Office at your county courthouse could probably verify that.

It will not matter as far as taxes go. It is 3% of the cash payment. Vehicle - trade = cash payment.

You will need a vehicle weight to register the vehicle. A scale ticket from a certified scale will suffice.
